Today is the Torres Strait Islander Flag Day. Along with the Australian National Flag and the Australian Aboriginal Flag, it is one of Australia's official flags. We have shared a post from the Torres Strait Regional Authority to learn more about the meaning and significance of this flag 🔵🟢⚫️⚪️

Today, 26th May, marks National Sorry Day. This year’s national theme, From Sorry to Action, reflects expectations that governments take urgent steps to create tangible and measurable change within survivors’ lifetimes. Sorry without action is not enough.

The first National Sorry Day was held on 26th May 1998 (the one-year anniversary of the 1997 Bringing Them Home report). The Bringing Them Home report recommended an apology. However, it was almost another 10 years before the formal apology on 13th February 2008, by then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. National Sorry Day is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour
the Stolen Generations.

National Reconciliation Week—held every year from 27 May to 3 June—is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme this year is 'All in' recognises that it is everyone's business to achieve this aim.

What’s the significance of 27 May and 3 June?

27 May marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

3 June marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title—the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation. This was a challenge led by Eddie Koiki Mabo to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no one).

Education is vital to this aim. There are many age-appropriate resources, for even young students, to begin to learn about this important part of Australia's history. Students will explore some of these resources at school over the next week. If you would like to read Sorry Day by Coral Vass and Dub Leffler, it is available online via YouTube.

Reconciliation Australia

The Scholastic Book Fair is a fun event that brings the books kids want to read into our school. You’ll find a fantastic range of engaging and affordable titles for every reading level — plus posters and more for sale!

Please make plans to visit and help nurture your child’s love of reading. Purchases can be made by EFTPOS or cash, and every sale directly benefits our school.

It's time for the Salisbury State School Scholastic Book Fair!

The Book Fair will be held at our School Library on Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th of May; mornings 8:15 - 8:45am and afternoons 3-3:45pm.

We will also participate in the National Simultaneous Storytime 2026 to be held on Wednesday, 27 May, with millions reading Luna Roo: The Kangaroo Baller simultaneously across Australia and beyond.

All are welcome!

1A Students have been working incredibly hard writing and practising their informative magazines, and the results are already AMAZING! However, we still have plenty of editing ahead before we go to print

A reminder for 1A parents and carers, please email Mr Armstrong regarding attendance at our Meet the Author session on 18th June from 12:00–1:00pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity to see their hard work on display.
