🚁🤖🖨️ Inspiring the next generation of innovators across regional Queensland
More than 400 young people took part in free STEM workshops in drones, 3D printing, robotics and coding at libraries across North-North West and Far North Queensland in April.
Facilitated by STEM program specialist Red Dirt Robotics, the workshops came to Cardwell, Innisfail, Mossman, Dimbulah, Mareeba, Cairns, Atherton, Ayr, Charters Towers, Hinchinbrook, Cloncurry, Hughenden and Julia Creek at the request of regional councils.
Young participants explored the technologies in a fun, hands-on way—building confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills. For many regional and remote communities these opportunities offer valuable access to digital skills that aren’t always easy to come by.
We received fantastic feedback from across the regions:
💬 ‘Participants learned so much, got hands-on with new skills, and most importantly—had a fantastic time!’
— Burdekin Shire Council
💬 ‘STEM education doesn’t have to be limited to classrooms or city centres… providing opportunities like this for regional and remote families is truly invaluable.’
— Flinders Shire Council
💬 ‘It was an engaging, hands-on learning experience that inspired creativity, problem solving and curiosity. What an amazing day of learning!’
— Julia Creek State School
This initiative was delivered by State Library’s Regional Digital Development Program, supported by the Department of Customer Services, Open Data and Small and Family Business.

This recognition reflects the incredible work of State Library’s Digital Inclusion team and our partners across 16 First Nations councils. Together, we’re supporting communities to build digital skills, access technology, and create opportunities in ways that respect culture, connection and place.
Congratulations to all the award winners and finalists who are doing such incredible work. We’re honoured to be recognised alongside so many inspiring initiatives.
Thank you to the Queensland Government for this acknowledgement and to all the communities and partners who make this work possible every day 💛

What a joy to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime at State Library today!
Families joined us for a special storytime reading by the Hon. John-Paul Langbroek MP, Minister for Education and the Arts of 'Luna Roo: the Kangaroo Baller'. Together we shared this story alongside libraries, schools and communities all across Australia.
Written by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd and illustrated by Jake Minton, 'Luna Roo: the Kangaroo Baller' is a heartwarming story about finding the courage to give new things a go.
Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate the importance of reading in the early years.
