📹️ Thank you to everyone who joined us at our webinar on 'Seeing our vegetation change: why LiDAR time series matter for Australia’s future'. If you missed it, want to rewatch or share, the recording is now live on our website.

https://youtu.be/2KnuB008s3I What if we could watch Australia’s vegetation change in three dimensions – tree by tree, plot by plot, year by year? Vegetation structure is one of the clearest signs of how ecosystems are faring: carbon stored, habitat available, recovery after fire or drought, and ...

🚨 LAST CHANCE! Register for TERN's October webinar, "Seeing our vegetation change - why LiDAR time series matter for Australia's future".

📅 Wednesday, 7 October 2026
⏰ 3pm AEST

In this webinar, three researchers will walk through why terrestrial and airborne LiDAR are becoming practical tools for adding that time dimension to Australian ecosystem monitoring. Together, the speakers will show how detailed measurements on the ground and broader aerial coverage can work together, and why repeating those measurements is what lets us tell recovery from decline, and storage from loss.

📖 Australia’s first centralised Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) Metadata Catalogue for remote sensing is being developed by TERN through a national initiative funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

Due for release in June 2027, the catalogue will help researchers, government agencies, industry, and other users of Earth observation products find existing Cal/Val resources and connect with the organisations that manage the datasets.

🌳 We're excited to announce that Dr Shaun Levick will be a speaker at our upcoming October webinar!

Dr Shaun Levick is a geospatial ecologist who integrates Earth Observation science and GIS modelling to better understand, monitor, and restore the structure and dynamics of ecosystems. Shaun's research merges cutting-edge advances in satellite, airborne, drone, and terrestrial remote sensing with artificial intelligence and cloud-computing to address climate adaptation and resilience challenges.

Shaun is a Senior Principal Research Scientist within CSIRO’s Environment Research Unit, where he leads the Landscape Observation team. His project portfolio focuses on building trust and transparency in carbon and biodiversity markets, primarily through the use of multi-scale LiDAR to better calibrate satellite products and reduce uncertainty in regional and national scale trends.

🛠️ The Great Western Woodlands is the home of TERN’s longest running SuperSite in WA. This workshop used TERN-developed ecosystem assessment tools to develop models for the vegetation in the GWW ecosystems (dry heathlands and shrublands, obligate-seeder eucalypt woodlands, shrubby/Triodia mallee, chenopod shrublands, saltlakes and samphire shrublands).

Learn about the tools: https://www.tern.org.au/neasa/

🌿 Sharing Knowledge to Support the Great Western Woodlands 🌿

Recently, Ngadju representatives Johnine Graham and Les Schultz, together with NNTAC GIS Specialist Nick Middleton, took part in a two-day workshop focused on the Great Western Woodlands.

Hosted by CSIRO in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the workshop brought together Traditional Knowledge holders and ecological experts from across the region to share knowledge and experience about these important ecosystems.

Over the two days, participants explored the region’s eucalypt woodlands, mallee, shrublands and salt-lake systems, sharing knowledge about how these landscapes have changed over time and opportunities for restoration and recovery. 🌱

The knowledge gathered through the workshop will help inform ecological resources planned for release in 2027, supporting future biodiversity conservation and restoration across the Great Western Woodlands.

👏 Thank you to Johnine, Les and Nick for representing and contributing Ngadju knowledge and perspectives to these important conversations.

🌳 We're happy to announce that Dr William Woodgate will be a speaker at our upcoming October webinar!

Dr William Woodgate is an expert in flux tower research and remote sensing technologies for environmental monitoring. He was a Principal Investigator of the TERN-OzFlux Tumbarumba site for 10 years, a global benchmark for validating environmental satellite products, he brings extensive experience in ground-based validation methods. His research integrates LiDAR, optical, and thermal imaging to assess vegetation dynamics, with a current focus on scaling sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from leaf to canopy scales.

With a background as a Research Scientist at CSIRO and an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship recipient, William combines academic rigor with practical insights, making him adept at communicating complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. His contributions advance understanding and application of satellite data in environmental monitoring and Earth observation sciences.

🌧️ Dry season in the Daintree, they said.

Some members of TERN’s Ecosystem Processes and Data Services teams just wrapped up two days at JCU’s Daintree Rainforest Observatory for a Vegetation Protocols Workshop, during what is technically the dry season. The rainforest had other ideas.

Rain aside, we ran a productive workshop (Kaizen-style) to review and update TERN’s field protocols for above-ground biomass, leaf area index and several other key vegetation data streams.

Ten people, two days, zero dry days, and a genuinely improved set of protocols to show for it! Rain or shine, TERN is investing in the methods that underpin Australia's long-term ecosystem observations.
