Last night President Daniel Fletcher GAICD and several of our LGMA Queensland Board members joined colleagues from across the state at the Local Government Association of Queensland Conference Gala Dinner in Cairns.

Our Board members hold senior leadership roles in councils across Queensland, with busy days and big responsibilities. They give their time to LGMA because they care deeply about our members and about the future of local government as a sector.

Events like this are a chance to back that commitment by showing up, connecting with people and supporting the professionals who keep our communities running. It was also a lot of fun. Tropical shirts, bright colours and plenty of laughs made for a great night, and a good reminder that strong relationships in local government are built over a shared table as much as in the conference room.

Thank you to everyone across the Local Government sector for a standout evening, and to all of the LGMA Board for everything they bring to LGMA and our members.

Advocating for Queensland Local Government

LGMA Queensland continues to strengthen its advocacy on the issues that matter to our members and the local government sector.

CEO Tess Bishop recently met with Belinda Drew, Director-General of the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety, to discuss areas where state policy, reform and service delivery intersect with the work of Queensland councils.

The discussion provided an important opportunity to raise the practical implications for local government across areas including disaster recovery and community resilience, Child Safe Standards, disability and inclusion, domestic and family violence reform, and place-based service delivery.

Importantly, LGMA Queensland is advocating for councils to be considered early as reforms are developed and implemented, with clear roles, practical guidance and appropriate support where new responsibilities or compliance requirements affect local government.

These conversations are also about building stronger connections between the sector and State Government, creating opportunities for ongoing dialogue and ensuring the experience of those working in Queensland councils informs decisions that ultimately affect their communities.

This is an important part of LGMA Queensland’s role: listening to our members, representing the sector and making sure local government has a voice at the table.

LGMA Queensland welcomes the announcement today by Treasurer Jim Chalmers to change the proposed Disaster Recovery Funding Framework.

Congratulations to the Queensland Government and the Local Government Association of Queensland who campaigned tirelessly for this outcome on behalf of Queensland councils and their communities.

For council CEOs, directors and recovery teams, certainty of funding means they can focus on getting communities back on their feet, not navigating red tape and more financial stress.

Earlier this year, LGMA Queensland members heard directly from Major General Jake Ellwood (Retd), CEO of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, on disaster recovery and resilience. It was a reminder of how much Queensland relies on the local government professionals who lead recovery in their communities.

LGMA Queensland is proud to back the people who lead Queensland's recovery.

You told us. We're on it. 🎯

In our 2026 Stakeholder Survey, 59% of you said professional development and training should be LGMA Queensland's top priority. We're already on a mission to deliver, starting with this new half-day masterclass.

Working Effectively with Government: making your council's case

Every council has a list of things it needs from government: funding for the road, a planning decision, a policy that reflects what regional communities experience. Most of those cases are well argued and evidence-based, and many still go nowhere.

The reason is rarely the merit. It's knowing which agency owns the problem, when the budget and policy windows open, and how to present a case so it can be acted on quickly.

Tess and Di have worked every side of the table: the department that assesses the proposal, the ministerial office that decides its fate, and the peak body making the case. In this practical session, they'll show you how it works from the inside.
