Next week is AWA National Water Week! We’ll be following the journey of water across regional Queensland to explore how it supports the food we eat, the industries that drive our economy and the communities we call home.

The theme of the week is Water is Life, and that’s something we see every day at Sunwater. Through our dams, weirs and distribution networks, water makes its way across the state to farms, businesses and towns, becoming part of everyday life for Queenslanders.

Throughout the week, we'll spotlight our different regions and showcase how water helps grow the products and produce that end up on our tables and in our homes.

Better water reliability for Burdekin customers

We've completed a major upgrade at Elliot Pump Station, helping deliver a more reliable water supply for irrigation customers across the Lower Burdekin.

Located near Clare on the Burdekin River, the pump station plays an important role in supplying water to local farms and communities. It now boasts new electrical infrastructure, replacement cabling and upgraded monitoring systems to improve reliability, safety and day-to-day operations.

This investment will help support local growers, strengthen regional agriculture and ensure water continues to flow where it's needed for years to come.

A big thank you to the contractors, suppliers and project teams who helped bring this important project to life.

Releasing weevils into the wild πŸͺ²πŸ›

Nature might just have the answer to one of our w**d management challenges. Recently, Senior Environmental Business Partner Paul Ryall released weevils provided by the local Council at Reed Beds Pump Station as part of a biological control trial targeting invasive salvinia w**d.

These tiny insects, just two to three millimetres long, have a big appetite for salvinia. By feeding on the invasive w**d, they can help reduce its spread naturally and potentially lessen the need for herbicide treatments.

With temperatures starting to rise, it's an ideal time to introduce the weevils and give them the best chance to establish themselves.

While it's still early days, we're excited to see how the trial progresses.

Behind the scenes with our apprentices πŸ› οΈπŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ

It's not always the work you see that keeps Queensland's water infrastructure running. Our apprentices are a vital part of our regional operations, contributing to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our assets delivering the water our customers need.

Recently, our apprentices worked alongside our mechanical team to refurbish a pump at the Woongarra Pump Station. The project involved regrouting its top and bottom sections, replacing the oil cooler water lines and installing a new copper line for the heat exchanger.

Once the refurbishment was complete, the pump underwent a four-hour test run, with temperatures and vibrations closely monitored throughout. All readings remained stable and the unit was successfully returned to service.

Through projects like this, our apprentices gain valuable hands-on experience while contributing to the safe and reliable operation of the infrastructure that delivers water to customers across Queensland.

πŸ‘€ Keep your eyes peeled as we continue to celebrate the fantastic work taking place across our organisation.

CANIA DAM | Blue-green algae alert

Routine monitoring has detected high levels of potentially harmful blue-green algae at Cania Dam and a Red Alert is now in place.

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can produce toxins that pose serious health risks to humans and animals, including skin irritation, gastrointestinal illness, and other symptoms.

During this red alert period, it is recommended to:πŸ‘‰ Avoid direct contact with the water, including swimming and recreational activities.πŸ‘‰ Do not consume untreated water from the affected area. πŸ‘‰ Avoid areas with visible surface scums, especially during windy conditions when particles may become airborne.πŸ‘‰ Minimise exposure to livestock and pets where surface scums are observed.πŸ‘‰ Consumption of mussels or redclaw during the red alert period should be avoided.πŸ‘‰ Consumption of fish should be avoided, or if consumed, be thoroughly cleaned using clean water and have internal organs removed before cooking.

The alert will remain in effect until monitoring indicates a reduction in algae levels.
