Happy International Carrot Day 2024! đŸ„•

Did you know that carrots are made up of 88% water and are a great source of vitamin B, C, and A. There are many different varieties of carrots, however, Baby Carrots are not one of them. Baby Carrots are essentially pre-cut carrots, and were created in an attempt to shorten meal-prepping time for consumers. Whilst their most common colour is orange, carrots also come in shades of yellow, white, and purple.

Incorporating carrots into your meals has many benefits such as boosting your immune system, assisting with bone strength, and helping to control diabetes. Just be sure not to eat carrots excessively, as studies have shown that eating too many carrots can turn your skin yellow!

We'd like to give a big shoutout to the growers who grow, harvest, and pack carrots across Australia!

Thank you for your hard work and vital contribution to both your consumers and the Australian Horticulture industry.

With the Easter weekend rapidly approaching, it’s important to note that employees are paid differently for public holidays.

Factors that determine this include:
- Your employment type (casual, part-time, full-time, etc)
- If you’re on annual or sick leave at the time of the public holiday
- And your normal ordinary hours of work

Employees (with the exception of casual workers) who normally work on the day of the week that the public holiday falls on, are entitled to be paid their base rate for the ordinary hours they would have worked, had they not been away due to the public holiday.

Employees have a right to be away from work on a public holiday, and should be given the choice to work on the public holiday or not.
Employers can request employees to work on a public holiday, but the request has to be reasonable.

To find out more: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/employment-conditions/public-holidays/not-working-on-public-holidays

Furthermore, if an employee is on annual or sick leave at the same time that a public holiday occurs, they’re still entitled to payment without it affecting their accrued leave, as public holidays do not count as annual or sick leave.

It’s important to check your employment contract, or ask your employer for a copy of the business’s employee handbook to directly answer questions surrounding pay, leave, and how that falls within public holidays.

Happy International Women's Day!

Did you know that the first Woman’s Day was held in the US in 1909?

This day marked a pivotal moment in the global push for women's fundamental legal rights, employment prospects, and suffrage. The date was quickly adopted by other countries, with the UN declaring it an international day of recognition in 1975.

Because of that first day and the consistent development of woman’s rights since, we have statistics such as:

- Women making up 32.9% of the Australian Horticulture Industry
- 1 out of 3 employed women work in Agriculture, globally
- 56% of students enrolled in agriculture, environmental and other related industries were women.
- 84% of all off farm income is generated by women
- In the last 5 years, women have had a 23% increase in non-school agriculture qualifications
- And interestingly, women make 75% of the Fair Farms team

Happy International Women’s Day from the Fair Farms Team.
