The risk is real - one safety switch may not be enough 19/05/2026

Whether you own or rent, you should have safety switches installed on all circuits in your home to keep safe.

Safety switches help protect you, your family and visitors from electric shock. But one safety switch may not be enough.

Unsure what switches are already installed?

Call a licensed electrician to check your home and make sure you’re protected.

Keep your solar panels in top shape:

🔍 Inspect for damage before cleaning
💧 Use water only—avoid cleaning products

🚫🧽 Skip scourers or anything abrasive
🚫💦 Avoid high‑pressure cleaners
🚫🪣 Keep buckets off the panels

General maintenance can be done by a competent person who has experience with solar energy systems, but electrical work must only be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Download our inspection and maintenance checklist for more information on what should be checked and why⬇️ https://www.electricalsafety.qld.gov.au/electrical-safety-home/solar-pv-systems

Before you plug in your electric blanket, check for frayed cords or damaged plugs. The blanket should feel soft and flexible, if the heating wire feels brittle, don't use it.

While using it:

• check the appliance for changes in colour from overheating and moisture

• maintain the blanket as per the manufacturer’s instructions on the label

• only use it for its intended purpose.

If there are any signs of damage, stop using the blanket and throw it away or get it repaired.

A quick safety check can prevent an electric shock or fire🔥

This Mother’s Day, make sure your gift is as safe as it is thoughtful. 💐🎁

If you’re buying mum a new electrical appliance, look for the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM). This shows the product meets Australian safety standards and has been properly tested.

Buying from overseas sellers online can be risky as non-compliant products may cause electric shock, fire, or injury, and may not be eligible for a refund if something goes wrong.

Dale was a skilled young worker, a loving partner, and a devoted dad. But an accident in the ceiling space of a Cairns school tragically ended his life.

Even if you think you’re safe, live wires in roof spaces are deadly. Turning off the main power at the switchboard is the best way to reduce the risk of electrical incidents —but it is important to remember some cables, like solar or mains lines, remain live and these risks will need to be controlled.

Whether you’re a tradie or a homeowner, stay safer up there, switch off down here.
