This National Nutrition Week, we’re highlighting the important role that nutrition plays in supporting the health and wellbeing of people living with cystic fibrosis (CF).

While some people with CF continue to experience malnutrition, the nutritional profile of the CF community is changing. National Nutrition Week is a timely reminder that nutrition plays an essential role in health and wellbeing. For people with CF, as CFTR modulators continue to change the experience of living with CF, nutritional care should evolve with their needs alongside their treatment and growth.

Nutritional needs can vary significantly between individuals and change over time. For many years, nutrition care in CF focused on helping children gain enough weight through high-calorie foods, supplements and additional nutritional support. However, as CFTR modulator therapies improve how some children absorb nutrients and gain weight, nutrition needs are changing too. Overweight and obesity are increasingly recognised as emerging challenges, particularly for people receiving highly effective CFTR modulator therapies.

Good nutrition is about more than weight. It supports energy levels, lung health, physical strength and overall quality of life. Regular guidance from a cystic fibrosis dietitian can help ensure nutritional needs are met as health and circumstances evolve.

At Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, we recognise that nutritional wellbeing is an important part of a holistic approach to living well with CF.

CFTR modulators are changing how nutrition is managed for children with cystic fibrosis.

For many years, nutrition care in CF focused on helping children gain enough weight through high-calorie foods, supplements and additional nutritional support.

However, as CFTR modulator therapies improve how some children absorb nutrients and gain weight, nutrition needs are changing too.

A new study surveyed parents and caregivers of 60 children with CF who use CFTR modulators. Among children who had been taking a modulator for more than a year, around two-thirds were reported to have gained an appropriate amount of weight. More than half also changed their diet, with some families reducing high-calorie foods, supplements, or additional feeding.

However, not every child responds in the same way. About one-third of children in the study were reported to have less-than-ideal weight, highlighting the importance of individualised nutrition plans rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The research also highlights the importance of considering children's relationship with food and weight. Some families reported concerns around eating behaviours, body image and weight, showing that nutrition care needs to support both physical health and wellbeing.

National Nutrition Week is a timely reminder that nutrition plays an essential role in health and wellbeing. For people with CF, as CFTR modulators continue to change the experience of living with CF, nutritional care should evolve with their needs alongside their treatment and growth.

New rules now prohibit life insurers from using genetic test results to deny coverage or increase premiums. This is an important step towards protecting Australians from potential genetic discrimination.

Many Australians have delayed or avoided genetic testing out of fear of financial consequences or denied insurance coverage if they are found to have an increased risk of disease. However, new rules provide further privacy protection against these concerns.

While individuals will still be required to declare existing diagnoses for themselves and first-degree relatives (mother, father, siblings, children), they are no longer required to inform their insurer of genetic testing results.

This National Carers Week, we recognise and celebrate the 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend, and raise awareness of their essential role. Carers support people living with disability, chronic illness or health conditions, often while balancing their own wellbeing, work, study and everyday responsibilities.

Thank you to all the amazing carers for your hard work and the essential support you provide to our cystic fibrosis community. Your dedication, compassion and resilience make an extraordinary difference.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals recently outlined their ongoing efforts to expand access to cystic fibrosis medicines worldwide, including a donation program for lower-income countries and new agreements in several regions. While this represents progress for many patients, it's important for our community to stay informed, ask questions, and continue advocating for broader access and transparency. For those interested, more details are available in the official statement. Let’s discuss what this means for people with cystic fibrosis in different parts of the world.
