πŸ”΄ EXTREME FIRE DANGER + TOTAL FIRE BAN TODAY

Greater Sydney’s Fire Danger Rating for today, Mon October 12th is EXTREME, and a Total Fire Ban is in place until midnight.

🌑️ Why? Hot, dry and partially windy conditions on the back of three unusually dry months. Any fire that starts today could spread fast and be hard to control.

πŸ“± Make sure you’ve downloaded the Hazards Near Me App and have notifications on for the surrounding area.

Take action now to protect your life and property.
βœ… Check your Bush Fire Survival Plan, and make sure your family knows it
βœ… If a fire starts, act immediately. If you and your home aren't prepared to the highest level, leave early for somewhere safer
βœ… Reconsider travel through bushland today, including tracks and walking trails
βœ… Keep the Hazards Near Me app handy and watch local conditions

🚫 Total Fire Ban means:
❌ No fires in the open: no campfires, pile burns, wood/charcoal BBQs or pizza ovens
❌ No welding, grinding, sparks etc outdoors
❌ All fire permits are suspended

πŸ”₯ HAZARD REDUCTION BURN – BEROWRA HEIGHTSπŸ”₯

πŸš’ Brooklyn Rural Fire Brigade crews are currently on scene this afternoon into this evening assisting fellow NSW Rural Fire Service crews with a planned hazard reduction burn at Alston Drive, Berowra Heights.

The Hornsby Shire Council Fire Mitigation Team is also assisting crews with today’s burn.

This is important work, particularly as we approach the bushfire danger period, helping to reduce accumulated bushfire fuels, strengthen protection for nearby homes and improve firefighting options should a bushfire threaten the local community.

The burn is being carefully managed by crews, with consideration given to protecting important environmental and cultural sites within the area.

🌿 Residents and visitors may notice smoke in the area while the burn is underway, and nearby walking tracks may be temporarily closed until they have been assessed as safe.

A great effort from all the crews and teams working together this afternoon to help prepare and protect the local community ahead of the upcoming bushfire season. πŸ”₯πŸš’

Please take care around the area while this important work is underway.

⏰ When fire impacted the community of Koolewong on the NSW Central Coast in December of 2025 it moved so quickly that people only had minutes to make life saving decisions. It’s been a long time since bushfire has impacted Brooklyn but we need to stay vigilant this bushfire season - is your household prepared?

Residents Elise, Paul and Chui Yin were all in their homes that day and reflect on the decisions they made and the actions they took as the fire impacted their community.

πŸ”₯ Their experiences provide valuable insights into the importance of understanding your risk, helping your neighbours, and knowing what you will do when fire threatens. What would you do if a fire starts near Brooklyn?

πŸ“’ Preparation starts long before a fire arrives. Find out how you can prepare for a bush fire at the Brooklyn Spring Fair and Markets this Sunday 10am-4pm or at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and create your bush fire survival plan today at www.myfireplan.com.au.
