The City of Busselton is continuing to work in partnership with Main Roads WA to preparing for repair work on the Causeway Road bridge over the Vasse River.
Main Roads WA undertook a structural assessment earlier this year which found that works would need to be undertaken to strengthen the bridge. As a result, they made a decision to impose traffic restrictions, including a 12-tonne load limit, northbound-only traffic and 40km/h speed limit.
Since then, the City has sought State and Federal environmental approvals to enable the works to take place. These approvals processes are still ongoing, with timing still to be confirmed.
River conditions will also influence when repair works can begin. Water levels in the Lower Vasse River need to recede sufficiently for the works to be undertaken. Based on historical records and available data, suitable water levels are typically not reached until around February or March.
The timing of the repairs to the Causeway Road bridge will therefore depend on both the completion of the necessary approval processes and suitable river conditions. The City will provide a further update as these requirements progress and the timing of works becomes clearer.
Until then, traffic restrictions on the bridge will need to remain in place due to the stability of the bridge, with southbound traffic still encouraged to make use of Cammilleri Street.
This bridge maintenance project is being delivered in partnership with Main Roads WA through State Government funded bridge programs.
