Locust monitoring is underway across NSW. Now is the time to stay alert 👀

As temperatures warm, plague locust eggs laid over autumn and winter will begin hatching, with increasing reports of nymph bands expected across parts of the state.

Areas across Western, Central West, North West, Murray and Riverina regions may begin seeing groups of young, wingless locusts known as nymphs, moving together in bands. (Western region can expect to see nymphs banding from late August until around 10 September, with Central West activity likely from 11 to 20 September.)

Locusts are most effectively controlled during this stage of their lifecycle, before they develop wings and can travel long distances. Early reports help Local Land Services and landholders respond quickly and reduce the risk of larger populations developing throughout the season.

If you see locust activity, report it to NSW Government Local Land Services on 1300 795 299 so your local biosecurity officer can follow it up.

👀 Be alert to sorghum downy mildew this spraying season!

Growers are encouraged to keep an eye out for sorghum plants which are stunted and/or yellowing ("chlorotic") while crops are flowering this January.

Sorghum downy mildew is an exotic fungal disease not previously reported in Australia which has these symptoms. If it were to find its way into Australia it could cause significant losses in sorghum and maize crops.

As with all exotic pests and diseases, early reporting leads to better opportunities for eradication or containment. If you see something unusual, call the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 88.

Although conditions this season haven't been ideal for sorghum downy mildew, it's important to stay alert for:

🌱 stunted or yellowing leaves
🥬 alternating yellow parallel stripes and shredded leaves
🍂 white 'downy' growth on leaves when conditions are cool (15-23oC) and humid (>80% RH)
🔬 fully or partially sterile heads.

For more general information, contact your nearest NSW Government Local Land Services office on 1800 795 299.
