Defence members serve wherever they are needed, and we support their postings across metropolitan, regional and vastly remote locations by providing housing that members and their families can call a home. This includes on Thursday Island, around 40 kilometres off the northern tip of mainland Australia, where we’ve just completed construction of a second home, ready to support a Defence family.
Like the recently completed modular homes at RAAF Base Scherger, delivering housing in remote Far North Queensland requires careful planning and practical solutions. For the Thursday Island build, materials were shipped from Cairns on cargo vessels that operated twice a week and took 2 to 3 days to reach the island, with wet weather adding further complexity to their delivery.
The old properties were replaced with a new and modern design that met the requirement of local conditions, including withstanding potential winds of up to 61 metres per second.
The project was delivered by Queensland Building and managed by DHA on behalf of Defence Australia The completed home is now ready to support a Defence member and their family posted to Thursday Island.
