WorkSafe ACT is supporting the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency who are currently running the National Asbestos Awareness Campaign.
The campaign aims to remind the community that Asbestos can still be found in homes built before 2003. It can be hiding in:
- Roof sheeting, eaves and gables
- Wall linings and insulation
- Vinyl floor tiles and backing
- Fences and sheds
- Bathrooms and laundries (behind tiles and in walls)
- Old heaters, flues, and switchboards
It is important to stay vigilant. If your home or a residential workplace was built prior to 2003, always check before you touch, disturb, or renovate.
The asbestos safety website provides essential information like;
- Householder and renovator asbestos safety guides
- Asbestos disposal guides
- Extreme weather effects on asbestos containing structures, and
- Asbestos exposure register

If a notifiable incident happens in a workplace, the PCBU must notify WorkSafe ACT immediately using the fastest method available (usually by phone or in writing), as soon as they become aware of it.
Notifiable incidents include:
A death
A serious injury or illness
A dangerous incident (even if no one is hurt)
A workplace sexual assault incident (including suspected incidents)
It is a legal requirement under the Act to report such incidents, and failing to do so can lead to enforcement action.
If you notify WorkSafe ACT of an incident by telephone, the Inspector may request notification in writing, you must complete a Notification of Incident Form or a Sexual Assault Incident Form within 48 hours of the Inspector’s request.

Falls from heights remain one of the most common areas of non-compliance on ACT worksites. Even lower-height falls can result in serious injury or death, yet WorkSafe ACT inspectors continue to see the risks on single-storey sites not being taken seriously.
A PCBU must eliminate the risk of falls, or if that is not reasonably practicable, minimise the risk so far as is reasonably practicable. For work involving a fall risk of more than 2 metres, a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required.

The and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency are currently running the National Asbestos Awareness Campaign. The campaign reminds DIYers, renovators and tradespeople that ‘Asbestos Can Kill’.
Asbestos containing materials are still present in many homes, sheds and fences built before 1990. Renovation and demolition work on or around these structures risks disturbing or damaging this material, putting tradespeople and occupants at risk of exposure.
