To all the first responders who support our communities when a disaster strikes โ€“ from firefighters to SES crews, paramedics, police, emergency workers, and volunteers. We know you donโ€™t do it for the recognition, but we see and appreciate all that you do.

We also acknowledge the families, friends and communities who support first responders behind the scenes, helping make this vital work possible. ๐Ÿ’ช

Applications for Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) Round Four are currently open. ๐ŸŒฑ

In Pormpuraaw, a coastal town on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, the airport is a lifeline for the local community. ๐Ÿ›ฌ

During monsoonal events, the Pormpuraaw Aerodrome has historically been prone to flooding, which would cut off the community from emergency services, medical flights, and essential supplies.

In 2023, Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council was awarded funding through Round One of the DRF to strengthen the pavement and improve drainage at the aerodrome.

The upgrade included a full runway rehabilitation, with new gravel laid, graded, and compacted to significantly improve runway strength.

The upgraded airstrip now provides reliable, allโ€‘weather access, reducing the physical and financial impacts of floods and cyclones on the Pormpuraaw community, and minimising disruptions to critical services. ๐Ÿ’ช

Round 4 of DRF will support more First Nationsโ€“led projects that combine knowledge of Country and culture to help communities prepare for, withstand and recover from disasters.
