The Malta High Commission congratulates the EU and Australia on the conclusion of their negotiations and the initialling of an agreement related to Australia’s association with Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. The negotiations were concluded within a record 69 days since the historic visit to Australia in March 2026 by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, underlying the common commitment of the EU and Australia to advance and deepen their relations on multiple fronts.
Australia’s association with Horizon Europe will facilitate future cooperation between Maltese and Australian researchers and research institutions.

The High Commission extends its congratulations to Hon. Dr Chris Fearne on his appointment as Malta’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs following the formation of the new Government after the 2026 General Election.
The High Commission looks forward to working closely with Hon. Dr Fearne in further strengthening the longstanding and excellent relations between Malta and Australia, while advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The High Commission also expresses its sincere appreciation to Hon. Dr Ian Borg for his support and leadership during his tenure as Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and looks forward to continuing its engagement with him in his new ministerial role.

High Commissioner Clifford Borg-Marks, accompanied by his wife, Fiona Jin Fan, recently visited Canberra Grammar School (CGS) to donate, on behalf of the Malta High Commission, a collection of children’s books in the Maltese language to the Mother Tongue section of the school’s Primary Library.
The donated books included, among others, novels written and illustrated by award-winning authors Trevor Zahra and Charles Casha, historical fiction by Gino Muscat Azzopardi, traditional folk legends from Malta, fairy tales translated into Maltese, reading primers for beginners, and a volume of Bible stories for children.
High Commissioner Borg-Marks expressed the hope that the books will be enjoyed by Maltese schoolchildren in the Australian capital and will enrich the tapestry of CGS’s Mother Tongue collection.
Mr Dan Wetherall, Associate Director of Students and Mr Adam Guzowski, Head of Primary Library, welcomed High Commissioner Borg-Marks and his wife to CGS and thanked the Malta High Commission for its generous donation and its support of the school community.

On 27 May 2026, High Commissioner Clifford Borg-Marks visited Government House in Sydney to call on Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC, KC, Governor of New South Wales.
The meeting was very cordial, with Governor Beazley referring to the multifaceted contributions of the Maltese-Australian community to New South Wales and recalling her visit to Malta in August 2024 where she was impressed by the friendliness of the Maltese people, the architecture of Valletta and the rich history of the Maltese Islands.
She also recounted how Malta-born Sir Gerald Strickland, Count della Catena, GCMC, had served as Governor of New South Wales from 1913 to 1917 and went on to serve as Prime Minister of Malta in 1927-1932.
High Commissioner Borg-Marks congratulated Governor Beazley for her success in her role since 2019 and said that he would continue to work towards the further enhancement of relations between Malta and New South Wales.
