Lift off for Latrobe's Aerospace Technology Precinct

Located at Latrobe Regional Airport in Morwell, the Latrobe City Council’s Latrobe Aerospace Technology Precinct is set to take Latrobe City to new heights.

As Australia's first integrated Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) precinct, the 4,000-hectare site will support drone technology, aircraft testing, research and development, and innovation in emerging aviation technologies.

With a strong manufacturing base and highly skilled workforce, the region is well placed to attract investment, create new industries and unlock future job opportunities.

πŸš€ The precinct will help position the region at the forefront of technologies reshaping aviation, while improving connectivity for communities across Gippsland and beyond.

🌏🀝 How is Aberdeen, Scotland similar to the Hunter, NSW?

Both regions are long-established energy centres going through economic and energy transition.

Aberdeen was the centre of the North Sea oil and gas industry, while the Hunter has long been a centre for coal and electricity industries.

Both regions are working to diversify their economies, support workers and communities, and build on existing energy-sector skills to grow new opportunities.

The Net Zero Economy Authority and Scotland's Just Transition Commission have established the International Just Transition Network (IJTN), bringing together nine international organisations with first-hand experience managing transitions in major industrial and energy-producing regions.

By sharing knowledge and lessons learned, regions around the world can learn from each other's experience.

⚑ One of the world's most powerful batteries is now online in NSW's Central Coast.

The Waratah Super Battery, built on the former Munmorah Power Station site on the Central Coast, is helping support a reliable electricity system by storing energy and responding quickly when the grid needs it most. With the capacity to power approximately equivalent of 340,000 homes during peak demand, it's a significant addition to NSW's energy infrastructure.

Approximately 1,000 people were involved in the design and construction of the Waratah Super Battery Project, with 170 workers on site during construction. This includes 100 jobs local to the Central Coast and Newcastle, and 474 workers delivering network augmentations.

Battery storage helps keep electricity flowing when demand is high and supports the growing amount of renewable energy entering the grid. πŸ”‹πŸŒ

πŸ”Ά Get to know our team πŸ”Ά

Meet Alison Tate, a member of our Latrobe team helping turn regional priorities into action across Latrobe-Gippsland.

Before joining the Authority, Alison spent 14 years with the International Trade Union Confederation in Brussels, representing workers in major international policy forums including United Nations bodies.

An interesting fact? Alison never expected that studying economics would lead to representing 210 million workers in international policy institutions. Her early work documenting forced labour cases inspired a lifelong commitment to ensuring people are heard, and their experiences help shape policy.

What Alison enjoys most about working at NZEA is collaborating with people who understand the importance of supporting regional communities through change and ensuring local businesses and workers in supply chains have a voice in shaping the future.

Outside of work, you'll find Alison spending time with family and friends, swimming, bushwalking or enjoying Australia's beaches and ocean pools.

πŸš† βš™οΈ πŸ—οΈ A proposed Advanced Manufacturing Facility for High Speed Rail could help create new manufacturing, skills and employment opportunities in the Hunter.

The facility would support delivery of the Newcastle to Sydney High Speed Rail project while strengthening local supply chains and advanced manufacturing capability.

As part of the Development Phase, the High Speed Rail Authority is calling for expressions of interest regarding the building of the Advanced Manufacturing Facility as well as the search for land near the rail corridor.

🌏🀝 Learning from experience: New international network launches to support regional transition

The NZEA and Scotland's Just Transition Commission have announced the formation of the International Just Transition Network (IJTN).

The network brings together organisations from around the world to share practical knowledge; exchange lessons learned and strengthen collaboration across jurisdictions working towards similar goals.

NZEA Chief Executive Officer David Shankey said:

πŸ’¬ "There are communities that have already experienced things Australian communities are only beginning to encounter. If we can take what has been learned in one community and put it to work in another, then this Network will have done something genuinely useful."

For Australia's industrial and energy-producing regions, the network provides opportunities to learn from communities facing similar challenges and opportunities around the world.
