My posts & comments are mine. They do not necessarily represent the official position of Council.

Steve has been a City of Melton resident for 15 years and during that time has, as a volunteer, mentored and taught disadvantaged young people life skills to help them lead fulfilling lives. He is passionate about ensuring the community’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised residents have a voice and are represented in key Council issues. He is particularly interested in relieving the cost-of-livi

🌳🌱 It was a privilege to attend the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Utsav Malayalee Samaj Trees for Life Program at The Ridge, Caroline Springs today.

Over the past decade, this remarkable community-led initiative has helped transform the Kororoit Creek corridor, with volunteers planting an incredible 55,000 native plants and contributing to the protection and restoration of local biodiversity, including habitat for the endangered Growling Grass Frog.

It was wonderful to join community members and hear from the distinguished guests in attendance, including Alice Jordan-Baird, Federal Member for Gorton, Mayor Lara Carli, and John Bentley from the Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden.

Congratulations to Utsav Malayalee Samaj, President Biju Thayamkery, and the many volunteers, families and supporters who have contributed to this outstanding achievement over the last ten years. Your dedication has created a lasting legacy for future generations and demonstrates the power of community action in caring for our local environment.

Here's to the next decade of restoring, protecting and celebrating our natural spaces. πŸŒΏπŸ’š

πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ I was honoured to attend the National Reconciliation Week event at Melton Community Hall.

🀝 This year's theme, "All In", is a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation every single day.

πŸ”₯ It was a privilege to participate in a moving Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, Didgeridoo performance and flag-raising ceremony, and to listen to important conversations about family, food, culture and connection to Country.

πŸ‘ A huge thank you to the organisers, Wurundjeri Elders, community leaders and everyone who attended for creating such a meaningful and welcoming event.

🚧 Road Safety Improvements Coming to Chisholm Drive, CS πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸš—

Melton City Council will soon begin important road safety upgrades along Chisholm Drive to help slow traffic and make it safer for pedestrians.

The project includes:
βœ… Four new speed humps between Caroline Springs Boulevard and Ballarat Road
βœ… A new raised pedestrian (wombat) crossing behind Westsprings Central
βœ… Improved safety for local families, students, shoppers and everyone using the area

Works are scheduled across June and July 2026, with some temporary road and lane closures required while construction takes place.

πŸ“… 17–22 June: Installation of speed humps

πŸ“… 29 June – 7 July (School Holidays): Construction of the new wombat crossing

During these works, detours will be in place via Caroline Springs Boulevard, Ballarat Road and Westwood Drive. Access to Westsprings Central will remain open at all times.

These upgrades are part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety and creating safer connections for our growing community.

We know road closures can be inconvenient, but these improvements will help make Chisholm Drive safer for everyone in the long term.

πŸ’¬ Do you regularly use Chisholm Drive? We'd love to hear your thoughts on these upcoming safety improvements.

For more information, including detour maps and project updates, visit Council's project page.

⚽️ HEALTH & SAFETY IN SPORTING FACILITIES

Last night at Council, I moved a motion calling for an independent review and expert advice regarding the use of crumb rubber infill on synthetic sporting surfaces across our community.

There is growing concern worldwide about the potential health, safety and environmental impacts linked to rubber infill used on synthetic sports fields. While many families, players and clubs rely on these facilities every day, it’s important that we ensure the surfaces being used meet the highest possible safety standards.

My motion calls on Council to:

βœ”οΈSeek specialist advice & latest scientific research from the State Government regarding crumb rubber infill

βœ”οΈ Investigate health, environmental and maintenance considerations

βœ”οΈ Review best practice standards for synthetic sporting surfaces

βœ”οΈ Explore safer and more sustainable alternative infill materials

βœ”οΈ Ensure councillors receive a full briefing to help guide future decision-making

It's about being proactive, informed and putting community health and wellbeing first β€” especially for our young athletes and sporting clubs who use these facilities week in and week out.

Our community deserves safe, high-quality sporting facilities, and this is an important step toward ensuring we continue to deliver them for future generations πŸβš½πŸ‰πŸ€
