Magpie Swooping Season is Here!
Spring is breeding season for many native birds, which means you may notice magpies and other birds becoming more protective of their nests and young.
If you're out walking, riding or enjoying our parks and open spaces, remember these simple tips:
✅ Wear a hat, sunglasses or use an umbrella for added protection
✅ If riding a bike, dismount and walk through the area if a bird begins swooping
✅ Keep an eye out for nesting areas and take an alternative route where possible
✅ Stay calm and avoid retaliating, as this can make birds more defensive
While magpies are the most well-known swoopers, other birds such as magpie-larks, kookaburras, butcherbirds and masked lapwings may also display protective behaviour during nesting season.
Most swooping occurs within 100-200 metres of a nest and is usually temporary while birds are raising their young. By giving them a little extra space and showing patience, we can all safely share our environment with our native wildlife.
