Clarence Town Rural Fire Brigade NSW Rural Fire Service - Clarence Town Brigade is part of the Lower Hunter District Did you know that there is more to our Brigade than fighting fires?

We are one of a small number of Brigades in NSW RFS that also maintain a Community First Response (CFR) unit. This means we work with NSW Ambulance to provide trained clinical volunteers to aid in response to medical emergencies. However, our volunteers don't stop there. There are several roles within our Brigade that our volunteers take on to ensure we are always ready to respond as well as be involved with our community. The support we receive from our communities fuels our commitment so THANK YOU! If you would like to donate to our brigade, head to https://shoutforgood.com/fundraisers/ClarenceTownRuralFireBrigade. 🚒 Combined Training – Structural Firefighting & Breathing Apparatus

Tonight, breathing apparatus operators and structural firefighters from Gresford, Vacy, Dungog and Clarence Town came together at Clarence Town Sporting Complex for a combined training exercise.

The scenario involved multiple people unaccounted for, a gas leak and smoke emitting from the building. Crews faced the challenge of systematically searching and clearing a large, complex building with multiple rooms and spaces, while managing the other hazards presented in the scenario.

Training like this gives our members the opportunity to work alongside firefighters from neighbouring brigades, strengthen their communication and coordination, and practise the skills required when responding to complex structural fires.

A big thanks to everyone who took part and helped make tonight’s training possible. Working together and maintaining these skills is an important part of ensuring we’re ready when our communities need us.

P.S. Our apologies to anyone in town who may have been alarmed by the scenario tonight. We had some very last-minute changes to the training venue, which meant things may have looked a little unexpected. Thanks for your understanding!

🔥 Fire Danger Rating Monday the 12th of October 2026 is HIGH with a Total Fire Ban for the Greater Hunter Region from midnight tonight.

What this means:

🟡 There’s a heightened fire risk. If a fire starts, it could be harder to control, so make sure you’re prepared.
🟡Decide what you will do before a fire starts
🟡 The safest option is to avoid bush fire risk areas.
✅ Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan

🔥 FIRE PERMITS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

With the Bush Fire Danger Period underway, fire permits are required for certain types of burning across our area. Before lighting a fire, make sure you understand when a permit is required and what our permit officers can and cannot issue permits for.

📝 HOW DO I APPLY FOR A FIRE PERMIT?

Fire permits are free and can be arranged through the NSW Rural Fire Service.

👉 Find out more: https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp?id=guardian_index

🧑🏻‍🚒 Our local fire permit officers are volunteers who give up their own time to assist the community. Please apply well in advance of your intended burn date. Don’t leave it until the last minute, as our officers have work and other commitments and may not be available immediately.

🔥 WHAT CAN WE ISSUE A FIRE PERMIT FOR?

During the Bush Fire Danger Period, a fire permit may be issued for certain types of burning, including:

- Burning piles of vegetation and garden waste, where permitted.
- Burning vegetation associated with land management activities, where permitted.

Each application is assessed on its circumstances, and approval is subject to the relevant requirements and conditions.

🚫 WHAT CAN’T WE ISSUE A FIRE PERMIT FOR?

A fire permit cannot be used to authorise the burning of prohibited waste or materials. This includes, but not limited to;

- Building and demolition waste.
- Tyres and rubber products.
- Mattresses and old furniture.
- Household rubbish* and plastics.
- Painted or chemically treated timber.

These items must be disposed of through appropriate waste and recycling services.

⚠️ BEFORE YOU LIGHT A FIRE

Even if you have a fire permit, you must comply with all permit conditions and applicable restrictions. A permit does not allow you to burn during a Total Fire Ban.

You must also ensure the fire is properly prepared, supervised and controlled, with adequate firefighting equipment available. You will also need to notify your neighbours and the relevant authorities before burning.

🔥 STRUCTURE FIRE – BOORAL 🔥

Last night at around 8pm, Clarence Town crews responded alongside neighbouring brigades and Fire and Rescue NSW to a structure fire at Booral.

Within just a few minutes of receiving the call, our Pumper was on the road, shortly followed by our Cat 1.

While crews were responding, information was received that the fire had taken hold of a shed and had extended into the adjoining home.

On arrival, Booral crews were already working to contain the fire and protect the house. Clarence Town firefighters quickly joined operations, with a Breathing Apparatus crew committed inside the home to tackle the fire that had spread internally.

Thanks to the rapid response and quick actions of the first arriving crews, the fire within the home was brought under control before it could take hold throughout the building.

Crews continued working for several hours to fully extinguish the fire, with our members finally returning home just before midnight.

Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of regular training and the value of having strong structural firefighting capability available locally. It was also another opportunity for our Pumper to demonstrate the significant increase in capability it has brought to our brigade when responding to structure fires.

While crews were able to prevent the fire from causing further damage to the home, we recognise that the loss of property through fire is incredibly difficult for any family. Our thoughts are with the family as they deal with the impact of last night’s fire and begin the process of cleaning up and recovering.

A big thank you to all crews involved for a fantastic combined effort and for working together to achieve the best possible outcome in difficult circumstances.

🔥Bush Fire Danger Period 🔥
Tomorrow, Thursday 1st October 2026, the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) commences for the Lower Hunter District! 🚒

What does this mean?
• The BFDP is in effect until midnight 31st March, 2027. During this time, you WILL require a fire permit to burn 🔥
• Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) days may occur which mean NO open flame is to be used on those days 🚫 These are days of high/extreme fire danger where weather conditions align for potentially catastrophic fires to occur.
• Fire Danger Ratings will be displayed everyday during the BFDP on our FDR sign near Cemetery Rd and the community will be advised via our social media on extreme, catastrophic and TOBAN days 🔈

Fire permits can be obtained by clicking this link 🔗 https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp?id=guardian_cat_item&sys_id=578b27b4c360b1104a9cdc311501313e 🧑‍🚒 please ensure you apply well in advance, our volunteers will need to inspect before approving your permit.

🔥Are you bushfire ready? 🔥

As we head into the Bush Fire Danger Period, now is the time to prepare your property and reduce fire risks around your home.

✅ Clear leaves and debris from gutters
✅ Keep lawns mowed and maintained
✅ Trim back trees and shrubs close to buildings

With Dungog Council's Open Burning Policy in place, the upcoming green waste collection is a great alternative for disposing of vegetation and garden waste safely.

A little preparation now can make a big difference this fire season.

🔥 A HUGE OPEN DAY & TOTAL FIRE BAN TOMORROW 🔥

What a day! We had an absolute blast at today’s Open Day, with a massive attendance throughout the day!

A huge thank you to everyone who came down, had a look around, chatted with our members, enjoyed the activities and learnt a little more about preparing for the fire season ahead.

And what better time to be talking about being prepared, with tomorrow set to bring increased fire weather conditions across the Greater Hunter.

If you need more information about preparing your home and family, head over to rfs.nsw.gov.au or send our page a message.

⚠️ TOTAL FIRE BAN TOMORROW ⚠️

🔥 Fire Danger Rating Monday the 21st of September 2026 is EXTREME with a Total Fire Ban for the Greater Hunter Region from midnight tonight.

What this means:

🟠 These are dangerous fire conditions,
🟠 Check your bush fire survival plan and ensure that your property is fire ready
🟠 if a fire starts, take immediate action. If you and your property are not prepared to the highest level, got to a safer location well before the fire impacts.
🟠 Reconsider travel through bush fire risk areas.
