At the last Ordinary Council Meeting, Council endorsed a strong environmental advocacy position to inform WALGA’s climate change advocacy work with State and Federal Governments. 📢
EVs are only one component of improving environmental outcomes for the City. As I mentioned during debate at the OCM, leadership in environmental sustainability remains a “shared responsibility” - including ensuring the transition to cleaner technologies is supported by sustainable, reliable and affordable energy generation. ⚡️

🌱🌳 Get your trees in the ground 🌳🌱
At the December OCM, Council unanimously endorsed an alternative motion I put forward to strengthen how the City of Belmont approaches tree retention on private land. The intent was clear: to take the time to get the policy right from the outset, drawing on best practice across WA, community feedback, and Council’s own strategic direction on housing, sustainability, and urban greening.
There is always some risk in pausing to refine a policy rather than rushing it to adoption. However, this approach gives Council the opportunity to deliver a higher-quality, more balanced framework, that protects existing significant trees, encourages better design outcomes, and supports long-term canopy growth while still accommodating development.
Strong, well-considered planning policies are crucial. They shape the neighbourhoods we live in today and the environment we leave for future generations.
I am excited to be planting a new Macadamia tree in my own backyard, which I hope will thrive, mature into a significant tree, and one day be protected under a strengthened future policy adopted by Council.
