What happens when a fallen tree blocks Pakenham Road while people are trying to leave Cockatoo as a fire approaches from the north?

This screenshot from our local bushfire scenario shows how a familiar road can become unavailable, with traffic building behind the blockage. It’s a hypothetical example to help residents think through their fire plans.

It's last minute, we know, but council has asked that we share this community event which may prove helpful in understanding insurance, disaster preparedness, legal considerations, and financial support following emergencies.

It's happening tomorrow night, 18:30-20:30 (6:30-8:30PM), at The Hills Hub, Emerald.

Otherwise, we're working away in the background preparing for our open day coming this Sunday!

Come and meet your local firies at the Cockatoo CFA Open Day on Sunday, 18 Oct 26! We’re opening the station from 1100h to 1400h (11.00AM - 2.00PM) for a look at the trucks, station, educational videos and demonstrations, activities for the kids and a chat with our volunteers.

The kids can explore the tankers and have a go at squirting water at our little house. You can also talk with the crew about preparing your property and making a household emergency plan before the fire season.

Cockatoo, come down and meet your local firefighters! 🚒

We’re opening the station doors on Sunday 18 October, 11 am – 2 pm, at 28 Church Crescent, Cockatoo.

Bring the family along for:

- A look through the tankers and our FCV
- Kids’ hose activities and colouring
- Firefighter demonstrations
- A chance to bowl a hose, with a prize up for grabs
- A free sausage sizzle, with soft drinks available for a donation

Have a chat with the crew about preparing your property and getting your household ready for fire season.

Everyone’s welcome. Parents and carers, please stay with your children. We’re still on call, so activities may pause if we’re needed at an emergency.

It's time!

Today we pause to reflect and pay out respects to the fallen Police officers throughout our country who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

We work and stand side by side with Police during emergencies.

Cockatoo CFA serves everyone in our community, regardless of their background, culture, ethnicity or circumstances.

Unfortunately, we have recently had to monitor and remove inappropriate comments from some of our social media posts, including racist comments. That behaviour is not acceptable on our page and does not reflect the values of our Brigade.

It will not, nor will it ever, be tolerated.

Our social media channels are managed by a small few of our Brigade volunteers. Every minute spent reviewing, moderating and removing offensive comments is volunteer time unnecessarily taken away from training, community safety, brigade administration and serving our community.

It also takes volunteers away from their families to deal with conduct that should not require moderation in the first place, including today, on Father's Day.

We welcome respectful discussion and engagement with our posts. Racist, discriminatory, abusive or otherwise inappropriate comments will be removed, and users may be blocked where appropriate and at our discretion.

Social media is an important tool for our Brigade to engage with the community, provide local updates, and share emergency information.

We don't want to have to reserve it only for emergencies.

We are here to serve and protect our whole community and those who visit or travel through our beautiful township.

Please help us keep our posts respectful and useful for everyone.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, mentors and father figures who simply show up, lead by example and look after their people.

Sometimes that is what the job comes down to, at home or on the fireground. 🔥
