Today, four Local Government Areas (LGAs) commence their Bush Fire Danger Periods, that includes the Clarence Valley,

Residents and landholders must ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. In addition to obtaining the required fire permit, you must also notify your local fire authority and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

It’s important that you and your family understand the bush fire risk in your area. Take the time to have a conversation, create a Bush Fire Survival Plan and know what you'll do if threatened by fire.

🔥 Bush Fire Danger Period Reminder - 1 September - New England District 🔥

As many areas across NSW begin entering the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP), we'd like to remind residents in the New England District that the BFDP for Armidale Regional Council, Uralla Shire Council and Walcha Council areas will commence on 1 September 2026.

So, what does this mean for landowners?

It is a year round requirement to notify your neighbours and the RFS a minimum of 24 hours prior to lighting a fire in the open.

From 1 September, you'll also need to obtain a Fire Permit from the NSW Rural Fire Service before doing so. This includes activities such as hazard reduction burning, burning of piles, stubble or other vegetation.

The Bush Fire Danger Period is an important part of preparing our communities for the warmer months ahead. It helps ensure burning activities are conducted safely and under suitable conditions to reduce the risk of fires escaping and threatening lives, property and the environment.

Now is also a great time to do a few simple and free things in preparation for the upcoming BFDP:

✅ Review your bush fire survival plan
✅ Prepare and maintain your property
✅ Clear gutters and around homes
✅ Check pumps, hoses and firefighting equipment
✅ Discuss your fire plan with family members

If you would like further information on things you can do to prepare for this Bushfire Danger Period head to the RFS website or reach out to our team on 02 6771 7700.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and let's work together to keep our communities resilient this bush fire season.
