We can't wait to celebrate 20 years of EstuaryWatch tomorrow!

And there are still a few tickets left for our event at the spectacular Kangaroobie farmhouse in Princetown! This is a free event for current and former EstuaryWatch volunteers, staff, friends and project partners. Visit https://events.humanitix.com/20-years-of-estuarywatch-celebration to secure a seat!

Join us for an art exhibition, meal and some great talks by estuary-watchers past and present. Weโ€™ll be celebrating indoors while enjoying sweeping views across the Gellibrand estuary landscape - as one of the four original EstuaryWatch estuaries, it's a fitting backdrop for reflecting on 20 years of community stewardship and everything volunteers have achieved together.

๐Ÿ›๐Ÿฆ‹ Signs of spring are everywhere! ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฟ

Spring is one of the busiest times of year for Corangamite CMA field staff, as we monitor our estuaries, wetlands, rivers and grasslands across the region. Along the way, we're lucky to encounter some incredible local wildlife.

Recent field work has revealed a colourful cast of insects, including the White-banded Grass-dart, Heliotrope Moth, Pea Blue Butterfly, and the striking caterpillar of the Eyespot Anthelid Moth.

Spring is a major migration and breeding period for many moth and butterfly species across Victoria, bringing increased activity and diversity to our landscapes. These fascinating insects play important roles as pollinators and as part of healthy ecosystems.

While our monitoring work focuses on the health of our waterways and natural environments, it's always a bonus to spot some of the smaller species that call the Corangamite region home. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

Have you spotted any butterflies, moths or caterpillars during your spring adventures?

๐Ÿšง Temporary Footpath Closure | Barwon River, Geelong ๐Ÿšง

Corangamite CMA are undertaking essential bank stabilisation works on the southern bank of the Barwon River, west of the McIntyre Bridge, from 8am Tuesday 27 October to 5pm Friday 30 October 2026.

To safely complete these works, a section of the Barwon River shared-use path (as shown on the map) will be closed to pedestrians between 8am and 5pm each day during this period - no alternative route will be available along this path, during these times.

Temporary fencing will be installed to create a safe exclusion zone while works are underway. The fencing will be opened after 5pm each day and closed again from 8am, allowing pedestrian access between 5pm and 8am throughout the works period.

We understand this may cause some inconvenience and sincerely apologise for the disruption. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these important works to help protect the footpath, riverbank, and surrounding environment.

Please refer to the map for closure details.

๐ŸŒ‰Celebrating a new connection along the Barwon River!

The sun was shining when community members, project partners and dignitaries recently gathered at Marnock Vale Reserve to officially open the new pedestrian bridge, marking an important milestone for one of Geelongโ€™s most popular recreation corridors.

The upgraded bridge will provide a safer, more accessible crossing for the thousands of walkers, runners, cyclists and families who enjoy the Barwon River each year.

Thank you to Christine Couzens MP for officially opening the bridge!

๐Ÿ“Place shapes us and every catchment tells a different story.

Across Victoria, CMAs work with communities to protect and enhance the places we call home, turning local knowledge into local action.

Every catchment is different and so is every solution. Thatโ€™s why your local CMA exists and is also part of something bigger.

Our latest Snapshot highlights the impact of Victoriaโ€™s ten CMAs delivering local, place-based action over the past year.

โญRamsar Announcement!โญ

The Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar Site is expanding by 1,400 hectares! Announced by Murray Watt - Senator for Queensland, Minister for the Environment and Water, and Michaela Settle MP, Victorian Minister for Water, the expansion will provide international recognition and stronger environmental protections for these four additional wetland areas:

๐Ÿฆ† Moolap Wetlands
๐Ÿฆparts of the Edwards Point Swan Bay Wildlife Reserve and Coastal Reserve
๐ŸŒฟparts of the Lake Connewarre Complex Conservation Reserve
๐ŸŒŠparts of the Point Cook Cheetham Coastal Park and Marine Sanctuary

To be placed on the Ramsar list, a site must contain representative, rare or unique wetland types, or be internationally important for conserving biological diversity.

These wetlands contain valuable habitat that provides food, shelter and resting places for migratory shorebirds travelling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

The newly included areas also support several threatened species, including the critically endangered curlew sandpiper, far eastern curlew and orange-bellied parrot. They also provide habitat for spiny peppercress, a threatened plant species that will be included within the Ramsar site for the first time.

We were thrilled to join Alison Marchant - Member for Bellarine, Libby Coker MP, and partners from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Bellarine Catchment Network, Bellarine Landcare, Swan Bay Environment, Friends of Edwards Point Reserve Inc., and Parks Victoria at Edwards Point Nature Reserve this morning to celebrate this achievement.

~ 20 years of community-powered estuary monitoring ~

Did you know EstuaryWatch Victoria began right here in the Corangamite region?

In 2006, EstuaryWatch was established as part of the Large Scale River Restoration Initiative โ€“ Managing our Great Ocean Road Estuaries, a program coordinated by Corangamite CMA. What started as a response to growing community interest in estuary health quickly grew into a successful citizen science program that connected local volunteers with the monitoring and stewardship of their local waterways.

Two decades later, EstuaryWatch has expanded across Victoria, with volunteers monitoring 18 estuaries and contributing valuable environmental data that supports estuary management and decision-making.

We're incredibly proud of the role Corangamite CMA played in the program's beginnings and the passionate volunteers, coordinators and partners who have helped it thrive for 20 years.

To celebrate this milestone, EstuaryWatch and WaterWatch Victoria is hosting a special 20th Anniversary Celebration, bringing together EstuaryWatch volunteers (past and present), staff and partners to reflect on two decades of monitoring, learning, caring for and connecting with Victoria's estuaries.

๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฑ Enhancing farm dams for a more resilient future

Our Sustainable Agriculture team recently joined a big group of landholders in Moriac for the Testing the Waters: Enhancing Farm Dams Field Day, exploring practical ways to improve farm dam health, water security and biodiversity.

For those who couldnโ€™t make it, some of the key takeaways were:

๐Ÿ„ Fencing off dams to manage livestock access
๐ŸŒณ Planting native vegetation around dams
๐Ÿธ Adding logs, snags or islands to create valuable wildlife habitat
๐ŸŒŠ Creating a variety of water depths
๐Ÿšฐ Providing alternative water sources, such as troughs

We also learnt how enhanced farm dams can improve water quality, support more native wildlife and even help retain water for longer, making them a valuable asset for both productive farms and healthy landscapes.

A huge thank you to Damien Cook from Wetland Revival Trust and Nathan Gregory from Sustainable Farms for sharing your expertise and insights, and to Rebecca for welcoming us onto your beautiful property and showing us all what a spectacularly enhanced farm dam looks, feels and sounds like in practice!

This event is part of Corangamite CMAโ€™s Testing The Waters Project, funded by the Victorian Government through the Our Catchments Our Communities program, and supported by the Ripple Project which is funded by the Australian Governmentโ€™s Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust. Through field days and one-on-one site visits, weโ€™re working with 30 landholders to enhance their farm dams across the catchment.
