COGS Pre-Season Group Training 🚒

If you saw a few extra fire trucks around the Cooma Recreation Reserve today, that’s what was going on!

Members from Cooma, Merrigum, NW Mooroopna, Undera and Mooroopna came together for some valuable pre-season group training.

The morning covered tanker tactics, motor vehicle accidents, radio communications, and finished with entrapment drills on each other’s appliances.

A big thank you to Rob, Kara and John for facilitating the day and sharing their knowledge and experience. We were very fortunate to learn from such skilled and experienced firefighters.

There was also plenty of good discussion throughout the morning, with members sharing their own experiences and learning from each other.

It was a great opportunity to sharpen up our skills before the fire season and strengthen the relationships between neighbouring brigades that we rely on when incidents occur.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to a very worthwhile morning.

⚠️ WARNING TO THE COOMA AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITY

There have been a number of burglaries, thefts and vehicle thefts around the Cooma area recently, including multiple incidents at local properties. Overnight, the Cooma Fire Brigade station was also broken into and equipment was stolen.

Please be extra vigilant, secure your homes, vehicles, sheds and equipment, and check any camera footage for suspicious people or vehicles. If you see a crime occurring, call 000. Otherwise, report information or thefts to police on 131 444.

Despite the break-in, Cooma Fire Brigade remains operational and able to respond to emergencies.

Notice to the residents of Kyabram and particularly around the McEwen Rd South Boundary Rd area. Tomorrow night commencing at approximately 7-8pm there will be an extremely large bonfire at 1463 McEwen Rd. The fire will be logged with the burn off notification hotline and the resident will have sufficient resources on hand to control the fire. From all accounts the glow will be quite visible due to the size of the burn pile.

Last night we were lucky enough to be invited over to Tatura Fire Brigade for a floor map TEWT.

A TEWT is basically a practical “what would you do?” exercise, we used a large floor map to work through a fire scenario, talk through different options and learn from each other’s experience.

It was a really good night, with plenty of discussion, a few different ideas thrown around and a lot learned from some very experienced people.

We’re pretty fortunate at Cooma to have neighbouring brigades like Tatura and Merrigum looking out for us and helping us build our skills.

Thanks again to Tatura for having us over.

Tonight our members took part in live fire pressure vessel training, gaining hands-on experience in managing a realistic emergency scenario.

Training like this builds confidence, teamwork and practical skills that simply can’t be replicated in the classroom.

A special thank you to one of our own brigade members, who shared their expertise and experience as an FRV firefighter to deliver an outstanding training session. We’re incredibly fortunate to have members willing to invest their time and knowledge into developing our brigade.

Every training night helps us become a safer, stronger and more capable brigade.

🚒 Thanks to everyone who came along and got involved.

A great night at Cooma Fire Brigade.

We enjoyed a BBQ, plenty of laughs and, most importantly, some really productive discussion about getting ready for the coming fire season.

We’ve now got a plan to work towards over the next few months, with training, equipment and brigade readiness all on the agenda. It was fantastic to see everyone contributing ideas and helping shape the direction of our brigade.

Thanks to everyone who came along. We’re looking forward to building our capability together and being ready to serve our community when we’re needed. 🚒

Smoke Alarm Action Day is coming up this Monday, June 1st.
We know everyone’s busy, but a house fire moves faster than you think. If your smoke alarms aren't working, you won't get the warning you need. It’s as simple as that.
Take two minutes tonight to do a quick check:
Press the button: Make sure it actually beeps.
Check the date: Look at the back of the unit. If it’s more than 10 years old, the sensors wear out and the whole unit needs replacing.
Look out for your neighbours: If you have an elderly neighbour or someone nearby who can't get up on a ladder, please do them a favour and check theirs for them too.
If you’re stuck, don't have anyone nearby to help, and physically can't check your alarms, please don't risk a fall. We have a brigade BBQ night at the station this Monday evening from 6:30. Drop on by and come have a chat with us so we can figure out how to help you out.
Don't leave it to chance. Test yours tonight, change the batteries if they're flat, and let's keep Cooma safe.
Cheers,
CFA Cooma Fire Brigade 🚒

🚒 Thinking About Joining Cooma Fire Brigade? 🚒

Like many small rural brigades, we lean pretty heavily on the same core group of members to answer the call — and the reality is we need to keep building the next generation so the brigade stays strong into the future.

We know people are busy. Work, family, sport, farming, life in general — everyone’s capacity looks different, and that’s okay.

Everyone’s 100% is different.
Whether you can turn out to every job or just help when you’re able, it all makes a difference.

What matters most is being willing to be part of the team.

Our brigade has a strong culture, good people, and a genuine sense of mateship and belonging. You won’t just be joining an organisation — you’ll be joining a team that looks out for each other and enjoys doing it.

No experience needed — we’ll provide the training and support.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, we’d love to have a chat.

📩 Send us a message to learn more.

Help us build the brigade for the future.
