🔥 Strategic Hazard Reduction Burns Conducted at Angledool NSW 🔥

This week, Western Mitigation Crews carried out strategic hazard reduction burns along the interface of Angledool and New Angledool, north of Lightning Ridge near the QLD border. Working closely with the NSW RFS - Far West Team, together wit the Area Community Risk Team, Westenr Mitigation crews conducted these burns as part of ongoing efforts to reduce bushfire risk in western NSW and protect our remote communities.

👷 How crews prepared:

• Mowers and a tracked loader were used to establish control lines
• Fire breaks were enhanced to protect fencelines
• A Hook Truck carrying a bulk water pod supported suppression efforts

🌱 The challenge:
The fire breaks are heavily infested with Buffel Grass, an introduced species that fuels intense fires despite its patchy growth. The dark smoke seen during the burns was a clear sign of its impact.

🌩️ Why it matters:
These burns provide a narrow but vital buffer against fires that could be sparked by storms in the coming season. While designed to protect local properties, the burns also protected telecommunication infrastructure and the local tip from wildfire impact. Remarkably, just like in 2023, showers arrived immediately after the burns — helping to fully extinguish heavy fuels.

🙌 A big thank you to the crews for their hard work and dedication in keeping our communities safe.

👉 Stay fire ready, stay informed, and support hazard reduction efforts in your area.
