The historic Cranbrook Hotel is a regional fixture located at 29 Gathorne Street in Cranbrook, Western Australia, in the Great Southern region.
Although the pub proudly and plainly has signage stating it was established in 1895, we believe it was opened in 1890 as a small wayside inn.
The Albany Advertiser reported that a license for a wayside inn was granted to George Dunn at Cranbrook on Monday September 1, 1890. The inn was built by George Dunn, who served as the first owner and licensee.
The venue served as a key meeting hub, a social center, and essential lodging for early settlers and travellers.
Cranbrook’s early growth was heavily tied to the railway connecting Perth to Albany, making the hotel a vital rest stop for sandalwood carters and teamsters.
When the hotel was later rebuilt, the bricks were said to be locally manufactured on the nearby Williamson family farm. During construction, the wet concrete verandah captured the paw prints of a WWI veteran's dog named Softy, which are reportedly still visible today.
The family-run pub offers short-term and long-term accommodation. It also serves classic pub meals and is known for its spacious beer garden and friendly atmosphere.
