🧡 FACT: We’re good… but even orange has its limits! 😄

VICSES volunteers respond to storms, floods and emergency hazards, including landslides and sinkholes when they create an immediate risk to people, homes or access.

⛰️ Call VICSES on 132 500 for assistance if:

🚧 A landslide is blocking a road or access.
🕳️ A sinkhole has opened near a road or home.
🏠 A landslide is impacting or threatening your home.

And while our volunteers are pretty handy, unfortunately putting an entire hillside back where it came from is slightly outside the toolbox! 🧰

If you notice signs of ground movement, keep well clear of the area and don’t put yourself at risk.

🚒🚛 IT’S TOUCH A TRUCK DAY – COME SAY G’DAY! 🚛🚒

🧡💙 MAROONDAH SES IS HERE AND READY TO ROLL! 💙🧡

The sun is up, the trucks are out, and our Maroondah SES volunteers are joining the fun at the Knaith Road Child Care Centre’s 2026 Touch a Truck event in Ringwood East! 🎉

We’ve brought along one of our SES rescue trucks and some of our fantastic volunteers, ready to meet the locals, show off our equipment and answer those all-important questions! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

And there’s plenty happening for the whole family!

🧡 MAROONDAH SES IS HEADING TO TOUCH A TRUCK! 🧡

Looking for something fun to do with the family this Sunday? Well, we've got just the thing! 🙌

This Sunday 18 October, our Maroondah SES volunteers will be joining the fun at the Knaith Road Child Care Centre's 2026 Touch a Truck fundraising event in Ringwood East!

We'll be bringing along one of our SES rescue trucks and some of our fantastic volunteers, ready to say hello, answer questions and give the little (and big!) kids a chance to get up close to one of our emergency response vehicles. 🚒🧡

And there's plenty more to keep the whole family entertained!

⛈️ During a storm, call VICSES on 132 500 for emergency assistance such as:

🏠 Storm damage to your roof – where your home is exposed or at risk of further damage.
🌳 A tree has fallen and damaged your home.
🚗 A fallen tree is blocking the exit from your property, leaving you unable to safely get out.

We’re always ready to help when it matters, but unfortunately we can’t repair the garden shed, retrieve the wheelie bin from three streets away, or negotiate with your trampoline after it decides to relocate! 💨

🤔 Myth: SES fixes everything. Fact: We respond to storms, floods and emergency hazards.

When should I call VICSES during a flood or storm?
The demand on Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) volunteers during severe weather is huge. A large volume of calls mean that jobs need to be prioritised.

VICSES is an emergency services agency and may undertake emergency temporary repairs if required. For minor leaks, superficial damage, removal of debris and cutting down of trees that are still standing, please contact a professional tradesperson.

Use this quick self-assessment guide to know when to call VICSES
Is anyone’s life in danger? Call 000
Are you seeking emergency help in a flood or storm because:
A tree has fallen (tree down) and caused structural damage to your home or vehicle?

There is damage to your roof or it is leaking significantly?

A tree or large branch has fallen and is preventing you from entering or leaving your home?

Your property is flooded or about to flood?

If YES call VICSES on 132 500. Your request for assistance will be logged by our 24/7 call centre. A local volunteer may then contact you for further details.

If NO depending on your situation you should:
Contact your insurer to make a claim or arrange permanent repairs.

Contact a professional tradesperson to repair damage or remove debris, if required.

🌧️ ARE YOU READY FOR A FLOOD? 🌧️

If you live, work or travel near low-lying areas, creeks, or major stormwater drains, flooding could affect you – and sometimes with little warning.

Floodwater is powerful, unpredictable and can hide some pretty nasty surprises. Roads can be washed away, damaged, and the water itself can contain debris and other hazards. The good news? A little preparation can make a big difference. 🧡

Before flooding occurs:

🏠 Know the flood risk where you live and work.
🎒 Prepare an emergency kit and have a plan.
🚗 Know where you’ll go if you need to leave – and leave early.
👨‍👩‍👧 Check on family, and neighbours who may need some help.
📱 Stay informed and follow advice from emergency services.
🟠 Consider having sandbags ready if your property is at risk.

Sandbags can help protect your property, but they work much better before the water arrives. Waiting until your lounge room starts resembling an indoor swimming pool is definitely leaving it a little late!

🌊🚗 **NEVER DRIVE ON FLOODED ROADS** 🚗🌊

It might look shallow. It might look calm. And you might think, *“I reckon I can make it…”* 🤔

**Don’t risk it.**

Driving through floodwater is extremely dangerous. It doesn’t take much water for your vehicle to **lose traction, become unstable or be swept away**.

Research using real vehicles found that a small car can float in just **15cm of water**.

🖊️ **That’s about the height of an average pen!**

So if the road ahead is flooded, don’t turn your car into an unexpected boat. 🚗➡️🛶 Turn around and find another way.

🌧️🌊 WHAT TO DO DURING A FLOOD 🌊🌧️

Flash flooding can happen very quickly, sometimes before an official warning can be issued. If flooding is forecast, knowing what you’ll do before the water starts rising can make all the difference.

Most importantly: Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater. 🚫💧

🏠 If you’re inside:
Stay indoors and monitor rising water. If floodwater enters your home, move to a higher level or safe elevated position. Check on family and neighbours if it’s safe to do so.

🚗 If you need to leave:
Leave early, take your pets, phone, medications and essential items, and head somewhere safely away from flooding. Check road closures and always follow emergency service advice.

🌳 If you’re outside:
Stay away from drains, creeks, culverts, low-lying areas, trees and floodwater. Seek safe shelter indoors.

🚘 If you’re driving:
Never drive through floodwater. As little as 15cm of flowing water can float a car – about the height of an average pen! No shortcut is worth turning the family car into a very expensive boat.

📱 Stay informed:
Keep up with weather forecasts and warnings through the http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/ and https://www.emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/, and listen to emergency broadcasters such as ABC Local Radio.
