Last Friday, during HIV Testing Week, a new HIV self-test vending machine has been launched at St George Hospital.

The machine is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making it easier to access free, private and confidential HIV self-testing when it suits you.

To get a kit, all you need is a phone number or email address. You can do the test yourself and get a result in about 15 minutes.

KRC has said a very sad farewell to one of our wonderful registrars, “Dr Bruce”, as he has come to be known.

Here are some words from Dr Patel who worked very closely with Dr Bruce -

For more than two years, Bruce has been a source of light at KRC, bringing an undeniable presence through his compassion, fierce advocacy for patients, and of course, his acerbic humour. A true style icon, with a seemingly endless rotation of matching necklaces and waistcoats, Bruce is always unmistakably himself.

Beyond the fashion, Bruce has been an incredibly thoughtful and compassionate clinician, always approaching patients with kindness, respect and genuine care. He has been deeply valued by both patients and colleagues alike, and his presence will be hugely missed at KRC.

Bruce leaves very big shoes (and very well-accessorised outfits) to fill. We’re incredibly grateful for everything he’s brought to KRC over the past two years and wish him all the very best for his next adventure.

Thank you for everything Dr Bruce. Thank you for your compassionate care and for turning up as your true self, each and every single day. We wish you all the best on what is next and beyond.

Today, on Mabo Day, we recognise and honour the life and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose courage and advocacy changed the course of Australian history.

The 1992 Mabo decision overturned the harmful colonial myth of terra nullius and recognised the enduring connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to Country, culture, community and identity. It was a landmark moment that paved the way for Native Title and greater recognition of Indigenous custodianship over traditional lands.

As National Reconciliation Week comes to a close, Mabo Day reminds us that reconciliation is not only about reflection, but about truth-telling, justice, listening and ongoing action.

At KRC, we acknowledge the strength, resilience and cultural knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the many community members we walk alongside and support every day. We recognise the ongoing impacts of colonisation, dispossession and systemic inequity, while also celebrating culture, connection and self-determination.

We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and honour the legacy of Eddie Mabo, whose impact continues to be felt across generations.

Our incredible Ann-Marie and Lucy had the chance to attend the Close the Gap Day event at Silverwater Correctional Complex, where they were able to connect with women in custody and provide information and support around the services offered by KRC. They went alongside SWOP and other dedicated harm reduction and community support services to help mob support mob.

Initiatives like these create opportunities for connection, dignity, culturally safe care, and long-term positive change, not only for the women involved today, but for their families, communities and future generations to come!
