Happy World Kangaroo Day!

October 24, 2026 is World Kangaroo Day and this year Screen Territory is celebrating the incredible international success of Kangaroo, a heartwarming Australian family film showcasing the Northern Territory's spectacular landscapes, unique wildlife and storytelling talent to audiences around the world. And what a journey it's been!

Inspired by the Territory's very own Chris 'Brolga' Barnes and the extraordinary work he does rescuing and rehabilitating kangaroos at The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs, the film is a wonderful celebration of our iconic wildlife and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting it.

Australia's highest-grossing Australian film of 2025, Kangaroo has continued to leap onto screens across the globe, becoming the highest-grossing Australian film in Germany in 25 years and debuting at No. 12 at the UK box office in January 2026.

The film also won Best Feature Film at the Screen Producers Awards and received a nomination in the same category at the AACTA Awards. Kangaroo is introducing audiences worldwide to the magic of the Territory.

With the film now screening on Qantas and HBO Max, and opportunities across streaming, television and education, Kangaroo will continue reaching new audiences for years to come.

This World Kangaroo Day, we're celebrating not only one of Australia's most iconic animals, but also the remarkable work of Chris 'Brolga' Barnes and the power of Territory stories to connect with audiences around the world.

Congratulations to the filmmakers, cast, crew and everyone involved in bringing this remarkable Australian story to life!

A SPARK-LING NIGHT FOR NT FILMMAKING.

Last Friday night, VMAX Event Cinemas Palmerston came alive for the 2026 SPARK Short Film Screenings, celebrating four original films made by Northern Territory filmmakers.

With shorts ‘Latch’, ‘Hardcase’, ‘With You’ and ‘The Long Drop’, audiences were treated to a fantastic night of storytelling with films that showcased the talent, ambition and quality of work coming out of our local screen industry.

There's something special about seeing NT stories up on the big screen, surrounded by the people who made them and an audience there to share the experience.

A huge congratulations to all four filmmaking teams, and thank you to our mentors, industry partners and everyone who helped bring these productions to life.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday night and helped make it such a memorable event.

Here's a look back at the 2026 SPARK Short Film Screenings.
