Have you spotted our Aloes?

Did you know there are different varieties of Aloe growing at the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens?

Among them you'll find:
• Aloe ‘Saturn’
• Aloe marlothii – Mountain Aloe

The spectacular Mountain Aloe originates from southern Africa and can develop into a large, single-stemmed succulent with impressive flowering displays.

But Aloe plants aren't only fascinating to look at. Some species have a long history of traditional plant use, and Mountain Aloe has been recorded in traditional medicine for a variety of purposes.

Next time you're exploring the Gardens, see if you can spot these beautiful Aloes!

What’s Flowering? Frangipanis, frangipanis and more frangipanis!

These tropical beauties are putting on a gorgeous display around the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. Check out Frangipanni Hill behind the Event Centre!

Some interesting facts:

Frangipanis love tropical conditions
Frangipanis, or Plumeria, are widely grown as ornamental plants in tropical regions, making their tropical look very much at home in places like Darwin.

Their flowers play a clever trick!
Frangipani flowers produce a strong fragrance but no nectar. The scent attracts sphinx moths, which can transfer pollen between flowers while searching for nectar.

There are frangipani varieties with Darwin in their names. For example, ‘Darwin Sunset' produces pink-red flowers with orange-yellow centres.

From Garden to Garden: Giving Green Waste a Second Life ♻️🌿

From palm fronds and branches, to weeds and logs, keeping 42 hectares thriving creates mountains of organic material each year.

That's why we're redeveloping our green waste recycling area into three dedicated processing zones, helping us handle this material more effectively and put more of it back into the Gardens.

This project is the brainchild of our Curator Manager, Enrico Penna and is in the first stages of development!

There's always plenty happening behind the scenes to keep the Gardens growing. Watch this space for updates as the project progresses.
