The liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) is a parasitic flatworm that infects the liver and bile ducts of humans and other mammals. Infection can occur when people eat raw aquatic plants, such as watercress, contaminated with the parasite’s infective larvae.

As immature flukes migrate through liver tissue, they can cause inflammation and damage. Adult worms may later inhabit the bile ducts, potentially causing obstruction and other complications.
