St John is the leading provider of first aid and paramedic services in the Northern Territory, delivering day-to-day emergency care, providing volunteer first aiders and high quality first aid products, equipment and training. We are a self-funded charity directly linked to the Order of St John which is a long established global organisation that can trace its roots back over 900 years. The organisation has been in Australia since the 1800s and in Darwin since the 1950s. We work hard to build resilience in the NT community through everything that we do. From teaching first aid to restocking first aid kits, through to our paramedics and volunteers and their service to the community. We undertake important projects such as Community Education and First Aid in schools where we provide free non-accredited first aid training to remote communities, new parents and in schools, as well a Public Access Defibrillator project where we aim to have 1,000 public access defibs in the community by the end of 2021. As a charity, all profits from our products and services, such as first aid training, first aid kits or patient transfers, are put straight back into the community through our volunteer program.

Caused by a rare tumour, 22-month-old Beau suffered a cardiac arrest at home in Darwin just a few months ago.

Today, he’s back to being a happy, energetic little two-year-old, and is living proof that knowing what to do in a cardiac arrest can save a life.

His remarkable story is one we’re proud to share this Restart A Heart Day, as a reminder that cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any age.

Knowing what to do before our paramedics arrive can make all the difference.

Remember three simple steps: Call. Push. Shock.

Surrounded by the people who’ve cheered her on along the way, it was a proud moment to celebrate all the hard work that brought her here.

A morning of ambulance adventures for some lucky little Territorians!

After winning our Thank a First Responder Day drawing competition, Acacia Hill School in Alice Springs and Zuccoli Early Learners in Darwin received a special visit from our paramedics.

Students explored the ambulance, tried on paramedic uniforms and even got a few rides on the stretcher!

Thank you to Acacia Hill School and Zuccoli Early Learners for such a warm welcome - we loved meeting you! 💚

One from one, babyyyy! 💎

In our first year participating in the World Stroke Organization EMS Angels Awards, three of our service regions have been recognised for the quality of stroke care our paramedics provide.

Our Top End team achieved Diamond status, the highest level available and one achieved by only three operational ambulance service regions in Australia this year, while Central and Big Rivers both earned Platinum awards!

It’s a HUGE result, with our service one of only two in Australia to receive recognition this year.

Kim Malkin and Robert Hopkinson from the Angels Initiative visited Darwin and Katherine this week to celebrate with some of the paramedics who deliver this care, with Alice Springs next on the list.

The awards measure the things that matter when every minute counts, including rapid stroke assessment, early hospital notification, transport to stroke-ready hospitals and reducing avoidable delays.

A huge congratulations to our people across the Territory who helped make our first year such a successful one 💚

When a patient can’t breathe and other interventions have failed, there isn’t always time to get to hospital.

Two advanced, potentially lifesaving procedures have returned to our Intensive Care Paramedic scope of practice, strengthening our ability to treat Territorians facing critical illness or injury.

Ten of our ICPs and all six ICP Interns have now completed specialist High Acuity Low Occurrence training in Front of Neck Access and Finger Thoracostomy, building the skill and confidence to perform these critical interventions when every second counts. A huge effort and commitment from everyone involved.

A huge thank you to Royal Melbourne Hospital Emergency Physician Dr Ben McKenzie, who travelled to the Territory to deliver specialist FONA training and donated purpose-built simulation trainers to support ongoing practice.

Alani’s reason for choosing paramedicine is personal. As a child, she spent time in hospital and experienced the care she now hopes to give others.

Today, she’s an intern paramedic in Darwin, learning to adapt her university skills to complex patient needs and discovering how much good care depends on connection, culture and community.
Her standout lesson? Having a team she can ask for help, without fear of judgement.

What does it take to turn a lifelong ambition into clinical confidence?

𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒇𝒕 💚

Elyse and Justin both moved to Alice Springs without knowing a single person.

What they did have in common was their mate, Sam.

Sam studied paramedicine with Justin at Auckland University of Technology, then worked with Elyse in Bournemouth in the UK before making his way to the Territory. He started in Nhulunbuy and plenty of people in Katherine will remember him from his time as a paramedic there.

When Justin was ready for a change from Christchurch and Elyse was ready to leave the UK, Sam gave them both the same advice: come to the NT and move in together, so you'll at least know someone.

So they did. They'd already been chatting for months and after moving in together, it wasn't long before they became a couple. The Alice Springs community helped bring them together.

Three years on, Elyse is one of our Duty Managers in the Southern Region, Justin is an Intensive Care Paramedic Intern and they're now engaged. 💍

Justin's advice for the lads? A simple bunch of flowers goes a long way.

Their house rule is no work talk at home, unless it's been a bad day. On those days, they sit down and talk it through.

When an ambulance pulls up in Alice Springs, the paramedics inside are people like Elyse and Justin. They give a lot to the community and they take a lot home with them at the end of a shift.

Look after them and look after each other.

14-year-old Neveah lived through one of Katherine's worst flooding events in decades and despite her own home being impacted, she supported her community to get through it.

On Saturday, she was back in first responder mode, this time at our 2026 NT Youth Competition, where divisions from across the Territory were pushed through realistic scenarios testing first aid, leadership, teamwork and decision-making under pressure.

Neveah helped lead the young Katherine team through the major simulation, demonstrating exceptional composure, care and leadership while supporting both her patients and teammates.

“I think having seen the floods in Katherine helped me stay focused because I already understood how quickly things can change and how important it is to work together,” Neveah said.

A fierce competition, the Parap Youth Division ultimately claimed the NT title and a place at the national competition.

With many of our youth members going on to careers in paramedicine and other health services, the competition offered a glimpse of the Territory’s future health and emergency response leaders in action.

A huge thank you to NT Emergency Service for providing the venue, time and volunteers that helped make the day possible, and to our event sponsors for their generous support:
