Tropics Early Learning Where little minds learn & thrive 🌿
Play based early learning from 6 weeks to 5 years
🤍 Community based | Inclusive | Nature inspired
📍 Malak, Darwin NT

Tropics Early Learning is a not-for-profit, community-run long day care centre based in the northern suburbs of Malak. We care for up to 90 children between 6 weeks and 5 years daily. We are open Monday to Friday 7:00am-6.00pm. Our centre is a warm and inviting and we work in partnership with our families to ensure the best outcomes for all children. The service uses the Early Years Learning framework (EYLF) to implement individual programs for each child. We have a range of engaging indoor and outdoor spaces to allow children to explore and learn in their own space at their own pace and time. WE LOVE PLAY!! Children should be taught how to think, not what to think and through play they gain the skills to explore, investigate, research, create and imagine! The children learn their capabilities through risk taking and also gain confidence in their environment. Our role as educators is to scaffold this learning, planning for development and providing guidance for the children. We believe in respecting our environment and that embedding sustainable practices will foster a generation who will respect and care for their world around them.

A little campsite. Big imaginations. ⛺🌿

Beyond the Play 💛 Pretend play gives children space to create their own stories, explore different roles and turn familiar experiences into something entirely their own.

A campsite setup can spark conversations about where to go, what to pack and who’s coming along. As children play together, there are opportunities to share ideas, negotiate roles and practise new language.

The setup is just the beginning, the children bring the adventure! ✨

What does your little one love pretending to be?

Sometimes children jump straight into a new challenge. Sometimes they need a little time to watch, think and find their feet. 💚

On our Ninja Park visit, the children were encouraged to explore at their own pace, with educators nearby to support them.

There’s no rush to move on to the next thing. Having time to try is part of the experience. 🌿

Some mornings, saying goodbye feels a little harder. 💛

A familiar routine like a cuddle, a few reassuring words and a clear handover to an educator can help your little one know what comes next.

Let your educator know what helps your child feel comfortable, whether it’s a favourite activity, a comfort item or a little extra reassurance.

Settling in is something we work through together. There’s always room for a conversation about how your child is feeling. 🌿

Save this for a morning when you both need a little encouragement.

Back for another Ninja Park adventure! 🌿

Following the children’s continued interest, our kindy and preschool children returned for more exploring, balancing and climbing.

With educators nearby, they had opportunities to try the equipment at their own pace and practise safe choices along the way. We also made time for some quieter play in the shade. 💚

Scoop, pour, fill… and repeat. 🤎

What looks like simple sand play is actually little hands working on so much like coordination, concentration, fine motor skills and problem solving, all through play.

Sometimes the simplest experiences are the ones they’ll happily come back to again and again. 🪣✨

Learning doesn’t always need to look complicated. 🌿

A playground visit holds so many opportunities to learn. 🌿

Where will I put my foot? How far can I reach? What could I try next?

At Ninja Park, the children had opportunities to practise balance, coordination and body control as they explored the equipment. Each movement gave them something new to work out, with support nearby when they needed it. 💚

A little campsite, a whole world of possibilities ⛺🌿

Our new camp area gives the children space to imagine their own adventures, make choices and create stories together. There’s something lovely about seeing where their ideas take them when they get to lead the way. 💚

“Play is where children learn that they are in control of their life. It’s really the only place they are in control of their own life. Play is where they learn to solve their own problems. Play is where they experience joy, and they learn the world is a happy place after all. Play is where they learn to get along with their peers, see from others’ points of view, and practise empathy.”

Curious minds and new flavours 🌿💚 A few moments from our bush foods experience with Dale, exploring what grows around us and the cultural knowledge connected to it.

Today, Dale visited and shared his cultural knowledge of local bush foods, using the Ngurrungurrudjba Seasons resource to explore how different plants grow and change across the seasons. The children had the opportunity to see, taste and learn about a variety of bush foods, including Wudumarning (red lotus lily), which grows around billabongs, golden berry, an introduced plant found along the edges of billabongs and wetland areas, Manjarduk (red bush apple) and Anjutmi (green plum), which grow in open woodland forests. Dale also introduced the children to Garbo (green ants) and demonstrated how they are traditionally eaten, with many children excited to have a taste.

Thank you, Dale, for sharing your knowledge and giving the children so much to explore and talk about! 🌱
