An Intelligent Transport System (ITS) road safety treatment will be installed at the intersection of Stuart Highway, Lagoon Road and Panquee Boulevard, Berrimah.

The trial ITS will extend approximately 200 m in either direction of the intersection along the Stuart Highway and create a safer road environment for people and vehicles

Within this monitored zone, the ITS will detect pedestrians in real-time in the traffic lanes, median, and verge and alert approaching drivers.

Activation of the ITS will highlight the presence of pedestrians and reduce the chance of a collision.

The system does not monitor the speed of vehicles or perform number plate recognition and cannot produce infringement notices.

Installation works will commence in October 2026, and the trial will run to late 2027.

• Always wear a correctly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet
• Make sure your bike is in good condition with reflectors, brakes that work and a bell
• Wear bright coloured and appropriate cycling clothing
• Use pedestrian and school crossings to cross the roads where possible
• When riding at night or in dark conditions, make sure you use a front and rear light

Let’s keep everyone safe while enjoying the benefits of cycling.

🚸 Pedestrian crossings - know when to cross... and when to wait. 🚦

✅ Drivers must give way to pedestrians on marked pedestrian (zebra) crossings.

⏳ Where there is no marked crossing, pedestrians should wait for a safe gap in traffic before crossing. Unexpected stopping of vehicles can increase the risk of crashes.

⚠️ Drivers must always remain alert and take action to avoid colliding with pedestrians, regardless of where they are crossing.

Be sure to check your EPIRB battery regularly.
When using personal watercraft such as jet skis, always wear a lifejacket.

Engineering is learned on paper, but understood on site.

Last week, DLI welcomed a group of Charles Darwin University (CDU) engineering students at the Holtze (Asche) Part B enabling infrastructure works site.

Students saw firsthand how design drawings are transformed into real infrastructure, including earthworks, stormwater drainage, and sewer and water supply services, on a large active construction site.

A big thank you to the contractor AKJ Services and our site team for hosting the visit, sharing their expertise, and answering questions, as well as Charles Darwin University for their interest in the department’s works.

The Territory is a great place to build an engineering career, offering hands-on experience and the unique perspective of the ground conditions that shape our infrastructure.

Are you familiar with broken yellow lines along a kerb?

They indicate no stopping or parking between the hours marked on nearby signage.

You might have noticed them at the recently upgraded Darwin hospital precinct intersection.
