💦September Training: Pump Operations (Session 4)! 🚒

We wrapped up our month of pumping last week by putting our team and equipment through their paces with a high volume drafting and relay drill.

The crew kicked off the session with drafting familiarisation across all appliances, getting the Light Tankers, the 2.4 Urban Tanker, and the Country Pump drafting smoothly.

From there, we stepped it up into a relay pumping scenario.

The cool stuff
🚒 Base Pump: Country Pump operating @ 2,800 L/min, drafting directly from the water source (being the estuary)

📏 Relay: A twin 90 METER relay line to our 2.4 Tanker using six lengths of 60mm hose.

🚿Delivery: 2,000 L/min delivered to the ground monitor at 7 bar pressure.

(Translation: We moved a lot of water a long way, and looked good doing it!)

Awesome effort of our 17 members who attended. As we head into the warmer months, this type of training is crucial for rural firefighting, where drafting from dams, tanks, and swimming pools is sometimes necessary.

September Training Schedule:
🫧Foam Use & Bulky Bin
🎛️Advanced Pump Operations
💧Hose Drills & Time Trials
🥤Suction Drills & Relay Pumping

📆 That’s a wrap on the year! 🔥
As we roll into a new financial year, we’re taking a moment to look back at just how busy our volunteer crew have been, and how much our members have achieved for our community.

🚨 124 Incidents Responded To
- Structure fires - 50
- Tree/grass/scrub fires - 23
- Road crash rescues - 22
- Direct brigade alarms - 13
- Rubbish fires - 4
- Vehicle fires - 3
- Hazmat/other - 5
- Structure damage - 1
- Special service - 2
- Aircraft incident - 1
- Property/other fires - 2

🥵 A big year for structure fires-
We’ve seen a noticeable increase in well‑developed structure fires. Among those 50 calls, our firefighters wore breathing apparatus (BA) 92 times — that’s 92 cylinders used in just 12 months at incidents alone. A huge effort from our firefighters.

🛑 Most house fires are preventable, heres a few tips around heater, electrical and battery safety:

Modern homes rely on more electrical devices than ever before, including products powered by lithium-ion batteries such as power tools, e-scooters, power banks and mobility devices.

To reduce risk:
- Avoid overloading power boards and outlets
- Replace damaged cords or appliances
- Only use chargers designed for your devices
- Avoid charging devices overnight or when unattended
- Do not use damaged or swollen batteries
- Avoid mixing incompatible chargers and batteries
- Be cautious when purchasing electrical products or batteries online, some may not meet Australian safety standards

Use heaters safely:
Heaters are a common cause of winter fires if not used correctly.
- Keep heaters at least one metre away from furniture, bedding and clothing
- Never dry clothes on heaters
- Turn heaters off before leaving the house or going to bed

Also take care with other winter items such as:
- Electric blankets
- Wheat bags
- Portable or decorative heaters
Ensure these products are in good condition and used according to instructions.

Hey Southwest! Whilst you’re checking your yard for trespassing trampolines and garden sheds, give your smoke alarms some attention too.

Don't put it off! Take a moment to test your smoke alarms today. A quick press of a button, just once a month, is all it takes to make sure they're ready to warn you.

Here's how:
🔘 Test it: Hold the button until you hear the beep.
🧹 Dust it: Keep the sensors clear of dirt and bugs.
🔋 Refresh it: New batteries = peace of mind.
🗑 Replace it: Every 10 years, no excuses.

That early warning could be the difference between life and death, giving you and your loved ones precious time to escape a fire 🔥
