Donnybrook State Emergency Service

Today we participated in a multi agency mass casualty exercise where we assisted with moving casualties from a simulated bus crash to the triage area. It was a great experience getting to work alongside St John's and Fire and Rescue.

Who is that hiding under the blankets? It's some of our SES members doing their burnover drills in preparation for the fire season.
While SES doesn't go near the fire ground we do quite a few different roles in support of the fire fighters and the incident management teams such as radio operators, runners, assistance with logistics and even water bomber reloading.
If you're interested in fire support roles or any other SES roles please message us.

🌟Prepared communities start with connection, local knowledge and small actions taken before an emergency happens.

🌟Understanding your local risks, knowing where to find trusted information and checking in with people who may need support are simple ways to prepare.

👉 Connect with people who can help you prepare

Local volunteers, community groups, emergency services and local government can help you better understand the risks in your area and how to prepare for them. Look for local preparedness events, information sessions and community activities where you can meet others, ask questions and learn more about staying safe during emergencies

👉 Start the conversation

Preparedness conversations can happen anywhere. Try starting with the people and groups you already know, such as:

• Neighbours.

• Friends and family.

• Sporting clubs.

• Community groups.

• Schools and workplaces.

Small conversations can help people feel more prepared and connected.

Create your emergency plan

Having a plan is one of the most important steps you can take to prepare for emergencies. Create your plan in Emergency WA - either on the app or the website.

🔋 How Many Lithium-Ion Batteries Are in Your Home? 🔋
From mobile phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, cordless vacuums and children's toys, the average household has around 20 to 25 rechargeable devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.
When used, charged and stored correctly, lithium-ion batteries are generally safe. However, damaged or improperly charged batteries can fail and cause fast-moving fires that release harmful gases.
⚠️ Watch for warning signs:
• Battery feels unusually hot
• Swollen or out of shape
• Damaged, crushed or punctured
• Strange smell
• Leaking
• Releasing smoke, vapour or gas
If a battery starts smoking, making unusual noises, or becomes extremely hot: 🚪 Get out and stay out 🚫 Do not touch it 📞 Call Triple Zero (000)
✅ Simple ways to stay safe at home: • Charge devices on a hard, non-flammable surface • Avoid charging devices overnight or when no one is home • Use the charger supplied by the manufacturer • Keep batteries away from heat and direct sunlight • Regularly check batteries and chargers for damage • Recycle old or damaged batteries at approved collection points • Never place batteries in your household bin
💬 Community Conversation Starter Take a look around your home today. How many lithium-ion batteries do you have charging right now? How many others are stored away in drawers, garages or sheds?
A few minutes spent checking your devices and battery storage could help prevent a fire and keep your household safer.

There has been a significant rise in fires related to lithium-ion batteries. Find out how to identify these batteries, understand the risks and be prepared in the event of an incident.

During winter, we typically see an increase in house fires. As people spend more time indoors and rely on heating, cooking and electrical devices, the risk of fire in the home rises.

July’s Preparedness Topic focuses on https://dfes.wa.gov.au/hazard-information/fire-in-the-home, including some of the emerging risks now present in everyday households.

Home Fire Safety brochures and the Home Fire Escape Plan - Family are available in a digital format (attached) and available in hard copy to order through the DFES website - https://publications.dfes.wa.gov.au/?hazard=Fire+in+the+home or contact me.

Please share this information below with your local community and networks.

The speed and ferocity of a house fire can engulf a room in less than five minutes. Find out how to prevent home fires and what to do if one happens.

It's that time of year again. With a cold front due later tomorrow and a stronger one due over the weekend it's the perfect time to get your yards cleaned up, branches pruned and trampolines tied down.
If you sustain serious damage call the SES on 132500

Your sign that there's some wet weather on the way! 😲⛈️

A cold front is expected to bring heavy rain, possible thunderstorms and strong winds across the Perth Metro and South West from late Wednesday, with another potentially stronger front forecast for Sunday.

Some areas in the South West could see up to 50mm of rain, with the Perth Metro potentially copping around 30mm. Areas between Gingin and Albany could also see localised flooding over roads and even if you reckon your 4WD could make it through, it's not worth the risk.

Now's a good time to bring in or tie down loose outdoor items and be sure to take extra care on the roads and keep an eye out for hazards like fallen trees and downed power lines during and after the storm.

Don't get caught off guard by the wet weather - download the Emergency WA App to stay across what's happening near you 📲
