This long weekend we’re expecting severe thunderstorms, large hail, heavy rainfall and damaging winds across parts of the state from this evening into Sunday.

Severe thunderstorms are possible across the Central West, South Coast, Illawarra and Sydney from today through to Sunday, before moving northeast early next week.

We could also see severe weather in the Dungog area as it travel through the state. Ensure you are prepared and to check the BOM website and keep updated.

Thunderstorms could bring flash flooding, damaging winds, and large hail, with heavy rainfall reaching up to 100mm in some areas. Minor flooding is also possible across state river systems.

Residents in the forecast areas should be prepared and follow safety advice:

🔸Clear your drains and gutters
🔸Trim back overhanging trees or branches
🔸Tie down loose items
🔸If you come across a flooded road, steer clear and find an alternative route

📲 Download Hazards Near Me to stay across warnings and if you’re going away, ensure you check the weather at both your destination and at home.

🚗 Remember, double demerits are now in play and the roads may be heavier, so drive to conditions.

If you come across a flooded road, steer clear and find an alternative route.

If you require assistance, call us on 132 500. In life-threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000).

Last Sunday the Unit was invited to the Bandon Grove Community Day. Bandon Grove is a small community of the Dungog Shire who during flood gets isolated due to the rising water around the town. Our Unit Commander had to opportunity to get up and talk to the residents on getting ready for the storm season. This also gave us a chance to explain the SES Warnings that get issued at certain times during storms, floods and Tsunami. The residents were keen to learn and also explain the areas of concerns. The local RFS were there also to inform the residents of the Fire Season.
The hall where the community day was held has been set up with internet, solar power and a AED so residents can go to during storms and floods to keep in contact with family and friends. It was a well arrange day for the locals to talk with the emergency services.

September 2026 – Temporary bridge closure
Transport for NSW will need to temporarily close Cooreei Bridge to all vehicles between 7am and 5pm from Tuesday 6 October to Friday 9 October, weather permitting. The bridge will reopen to all traffic outside of these hours.

During the temporary bridge closure, a detour will be in place for all light vehicles via Alison Road, Clarence Town Road, Mary Street and Dowling Street which is expected to add around 30 minutes travel time.

To ensure the safety of motorists during the closure, a one-way detour will be in place for all heavy vehicles.

For more information about the closure and to view the detour maps. Please view our September 2026 project update (PDF, 530.86 KB).

Last weekend the Dungog Unit and a couple from Maitland City Unit were busy supporting the Dungog Pedalfest by escorting the bike riders around the Fostererton Loop Ride which was a long 10km ride for children and adults. We also supported the event after lunch to be a safety barrier at each end of the main street of Dungog. Well done team you showed Dungog town that the Dungog SES is active in the shire.
