We are your community’s first responders. It’s not just about fire.

A few weekends ago we were at work in Cherrybrook where a storm had brought down several trees across roads. Crews across the district were called out to remove these trees and make the area safe ag*in.

The RFS provides many training opportunities such as a chainsaw operator course, safe working on roofs and truck driving. These skills were used by different members of our crew to safely and quickly respond to and resolve the incident.

We are currently recruiting new members so if you’d like to play an active role in keeping our community safe please apply through the RFS website or reach out via Facebook or Instagram.

Last Saturday Dural RFS attended an incident involving a truck on Hemers Road, Dural. Powerlines had been hit and brought down on both sides of the road.

Both our trucks attended and the location was made safe until Ausgrid arrived to take control of the repairs.

We don’t only fight bush fires. Our brigade attends a wide variety of incidents including power line breakages involving vehicles and storms.

👨‍🚒 If you would like to become a first responder and firefighter, we are currently recruiting new members! You can reach out to us via Facebook or Instagram with any questions.

Recently our crews have been called to multiple pile burns which either escaped or did not have the appropriate permits. In one day we had 4 fire calls to different pile burns.

October 1st was the start of the bushfire danger period. This marks a time of heightened bush fire risk and means that we should all do our part to keep our community and properties safe.

During the bushfire danger period pile burns require RFS permits in addition to any other council regulations. Here are some key points to note before burning
🔥 Obtain an RFS permit through the RFS website
🔥 Obtain an EPA permit through the Hornsby council website
🔥 Notify your neighbours and the RFS at least 24 hours before burning
🔥 Ensure that you have an appropriate water supply and fire breaks
🔥 Check that the weather conditions are appropriate for burning and no total fire ban is in place
🔥 Monitor the fire and completely extinguish it before leaving it unattended

Last night Dural was responded to a bushfire in Porters Road. Crews worked for three hours to extinguish burning bushland adjacent to houses. The fire had spread from a pile burn.

It’s a timely reminder to ensure your pile burns are authorised, notified and comply with RFS and Council requirements. Information can be found for the Hornsby LGA if you search for Hornsby Backyard Burning.

You don’t need to have bush directly next to your property to be at risk during a bush fire. Embers can travel long distances quickly and start a fire in your gutters or roof spaces. Even if you can’t see the bush make sure you stay well prepared before and during the bush fire danger period.

What is on your to-do list for this Get Ready Weekend?
- Do you need to update your bushfire survival plan
- Do you need to clear vegetation around your property
- Have you checked your gutters

Visit myfireplan.com.au to see how you can prepare, come to our Bunnings event on the 19th of September or message us if you have any questions. Now is the best time to put your plan together.

On Fathers’ Day 2026 a crew from Dural joined crews from several other brigades in Hornsby and Ku rung g*i councils’ areas to complete a complex hazard reduction burn at Moore’s Creek in East Linfield.

We worked along a 500m track without road access reducing fuel loads and fire risk to adjacent properties. Preservation of known indigenous heritage sites was a focus for this hazard reduction burn. Our crew dealt with some steep terrain and a lot of hose work. The crew returned home in time for their families’ fathers’ day celebrations,

We are recruiting more members. If you’d like to join us to help reduce our communities’ fire risk and look after our precious bushland and heritage message us or say hi one of our upcoming community events.
