The Wheelchair Athlete by George Benjamin Review by Khanna (Edwina) Barutha

The Wheelchair Athlete, written by 12-year-old Assyrian author George Benjamin, is a touching and inspiring story about courage, resilience, determination and never giving up on your dreams.

The story follows Noah, a young boy whose greatest dream is to become an international basketball player. His life changes forever when, on the way to basketball practice, his mother is involved in a car accident, leaving Noah unable to walk.

Returning to school becomes difficult for Noah. He withdraws from his classmates and struggles particularly during PDHPE. He feels that his dreams have been taken away from him and becomes frustrated when people show him sympathy. Noah does not want pity; he wants to be recognised for who he is and for what he can still achieve. One of the most powerful moments in the story comes when Noah's coach reminds him that he is at the heart of the basketball team. Rather than allowing Noah to give up, his coach challenges him to show the world how he can โ€œput ability into disability.โ€

This powerful message captures the heart of the book. Noah's journey demonstrates that a disability does not define a person's potential. With determination, encouragement and belief, obstacles can become opportunities to discover strengths we may never have known we possessed.

What makes this book particularly special is that George wrote it at just 12 years of age. His imagination, maturity and understanding of resilience shine throughout the story. It is a wonderful achievement for such a young Assyrian author.

The story has also taken on a new life beyond the pages of the book, with George's school adapting The Wheelchair Athlete into a short play. It is wonderful to see his story being shared with an audience in a new and creative way.

The Wheelchair Athlete reminds young readers and adults alike that our dreams may sometimes change, but that does not mean we have to stop dreaming.

A truly inspiring story about courage, resilience and turning โ€œdisabilityโ€ into โ€œability.โ€

George, I loved your book and I can't wait to read the next one! Well done, aziza!

The Church of the East: Between Ecclesiastical Identity and National Identity

Dr Esho Sanharib Marcus

This week, we feature a thought-provoking work exploring the complex relationship between religious identity, national identity and the history of the Church of the East.

Written in Arabic and English, the book examines historical terminology and the development of Assyrian identity, including the use of terms such as Assyrian and Chaldean. Drawing on historical and ecclesiastical sources, Dr Marcus encourages readers to explore how identity and terminology have evolved over time.

For the Assyrian community, the Church of the East is deeply connected to our language, history, culture and heritage. Books such as this provide an opportunity to learn, reflect and engage with the historical sources that have shaped our understanding of who we are.

The Church of the East: Between Ecclesiastical Identity and National Identity is a valuable addition to the collection of the Ashurbanipal Library, Sydney, helping preserve works that document the rich intellectual, cultural, historical and religious heritage of the Assyrian people.

Have you read this book or explored the history of the Church of the East? Share your thoughts with us!

This week, we feature a significant new work from the Ashurbanipal Library collection: Still Here: Echoes of Assyrian Survival by Frederick A. Aprim.
For generations, the claim that the Assyrians disappeared following the fall of the Assyrian Empire has been repeated in popular and, at times, scholarly discussions. This book takes a closer look at that claim and examines the historical evidence for Assyrian continuity across the centuries.
Drawing on historical records and documentary evidence, Aprim explores references to the Assyrians, their communities and their cities throughout history, challenging assumptions about their disappearance and inviting readers to consider the evidence of a people who have continued to survive and preserve their identity.
๐Ÿ’™ Why this book matters
Still Here contributes to an important conversation about Assyrian history, identity and continuity. It encourages readers to look beyond commonly repeated narratives and engage with the historical record documenting the survival of the Assyrian people in the Middle East.
For the Ashurbanipal Library, works like this are particularly valuable. Preserving and making accessible research on Assyrian history helps future generations understand our past, explore our heritage and continue the important work of documenting our story.
๐Ÿ“– A valuable addition to our collection for anyone interested in Assyrian history, heritage, identity and continuity.
