GET READY TO SHAKEOUT! – THURSDAY 15 OCTOBER 🌏

What would you do if an earthquake struck? Now is the time to practise!

The Great ShakeOut is a Global initiative happening on Thursday 15 October, and we are encouraging you to get involved by practising what to do during an earthquake.

🧎 DROP down onto your hands and knees.
🛡️ COVER your head and neck and get under a sturdy table or desk if possible.
✊ HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

Taking a few minutes to practise can help you feel more prepared and know what to do in an emergency.

✅ Register your earthquake drill
✅ Get your school, workplace, family or community group involved
✅ Practise staying safe!

Let's ShakeOut together and build a safer, more prepared community.

Community engagement is one of the vital roles VICSES volunteers perform — helping people understand local risks, prepare early and stay safe during emergencies.
This week, our crews have been out in the community at Riggs Creek CFA and the Henty Machinery Field Days, sharing practical information and answering questions about preparing for the upcoming high-risk weather season.
Our crew was also manning the Driver Reviver site at the Balmattum Truck Stop, encouraging drivers to take a break, refresh and arrive safely at their destination.
If you attended the Melbourne Show, you may also have seen SES volunteers helping members of the community learn simple steps they can take at home to be better prepared for severe weather events.
Our volunteers also visit schools, kindergartens, community groups and local organisations to talk about emergency preparedness, severe weather safety and what to do before, during and after an emergency.
Preparing together helps build safer, more resilient communities. If Community Engagement is a role that interests you, send us a message and we will be in touch.

Great morning visiting Riggs Creek CFA.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the CFA members to get hands-on with our equipment and build a better understanding of the gear we rely on during call-outs.
Connecting with CFA brigades mean we can support each other during emergencies.
A big thank you to the Riggs Creek crew for inviting us — we're stronger together.

Today our volunteers came together for a catch up to check in, connect and remind each other that no one in this team ever stands alone.
We’re a strong unit because we look out for each other. Days like today show the power of taking a pause and asking that small but important question: “Are you OK?”
Proud of this team and the way we show up for one another.

PLEASE DON’T RISK IT — NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATER
Our crews have been out today assisting drivers who have found themselves in trouble on flooded roads.
It takes just 15cm of water to float a car — and floodwater can be deeper, faster and more dangerous than it looks.

The Seven Creeks at Strathbogie is nearing its peak from last nights rain. That water will make its way down to Euroa throughout the day and the Seven Creeks in Euroa will most likely peak above the minor flood level and below the moderate flood level.

Daytime chainsaw training with a view 🪚⛰️

Yesterday’s daytime training crew travelled to Upton Hill for chainsaw training.

One of our members lives in Upton Hill and normally drives almost an hour to come to Euroa SES for training so this time we switched it up and went to him. 👌

Chainsaw training 🪾🪚

Tonight’s training we covered hazard awareness, chainsaw safety, usage, and maintenance and also portable lighting.
All of our members got a chance to practice using the saws in a controlled and safe environment, with instruction and support from our trained and experienced members.

Did you know that our chainsaw operators all have a nationally recognised chainsaw certificate. 🥳Just another perk of being a local SES volunteer
