VAHS' Men's Group invites men from the Community aged 15+ to express their interest in a 10 week yidaki/didgeridoo program πŸͺƒ

The program will create a safe and supportive space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, led by Cultural facilitators to create art to paint or burn onto their own yidaki, learn how to play, and take home their completed yidaki 🎢

VAHS respectfully acknowledges 3 June as Mabo Day, commemorating Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo's successful efforts to legally overturn Australia has "terra nullius" or "land belonging to no one" πŸ’™πŸ’šπŸ€

Eddie fought 10 long years before the High Court of Australia finally ruled that terra nullius should never have been applied to Australia, recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples had rights to the land long before British colonisation, and that this custodianship exists to this day.

The Mabo decision marked a significant turning point in history, and acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' ongoing connection to Country. Eddie's efforts and the Mabo decision led to the passing of the Native Title Act in 1993 πŸ“œ

Without Eddie, we would not have the native title rights that shape the lives and futures of Mob Australia-wide. While Eddie sadly passed away just five months before the historic decision came, his legacy has ensured our rights and our capacity to enjoy them ✊🏾
