This week is National Reconciliation Week, a time where we reflect on the history of this country. Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.

This year’s theme being All In is a call for all Australians to play their part in creating change and committing to reconciliation every day. All In encourages everyone to play an active role in advancing reconciliation and reminds us that meaningful change happens when we work together with compassion, commitment, understanding and honesty.

Ways you can be an active participate in reconciliation...
👂Listen and Learn from First Nations people within your community.
🙋Participate in upcoming Reconciliation Events.
📖Educate yourself on local First Nations history.
🎗️Support Indigenous owned businesses.
📣Call out discrimination!

At Maribyrnong Youth Services we are committed to our work contributing to a future where First Nations young people’s culture and contributions are celebrated. Where injustices are addressed and work towards creating a community with equal access and opportunity.

Always was, Always will be.

IDAHOBIT Day has just passed on May the 17th! Maribyrnong Youth Services have celebrated with a number of events over the last week 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Maribyrnong Youth Services partnered with Footscray High Schools Barkly Campus SAGA Group (Sexuality and Gender Alliance Group) to create a celebration for IDAHOBIT Day. IDAHOBIT day aims at providing education around homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. The young people in SAGA wanted this event to be educational but also fun!

The event was a huge success, with over 200 young people participating in activities led by Barkly’s SAGA student group including face painting, roaming polaroids, snacks, loom bands and affirmation walls. The group also led a student panel, where other students could ask anonymous questions about IDAHOBIT and the panellists lived experience.

“It’s been fun and I feel seen.. Its important to have this event to create more allies.”- Student attendee

“It was nice to be involved in the planning.. it’s like your birthday party that you’ve been planning for ages and the day finally comes.”- SAGA Student

“It’s simply the best IDAHOBIT event I’ve been to- at my last school they just made a bunch of purple cupcakes.”- SAGA Student

“We’re so grateful to have this opportunity for the students. The dedication that Davina put into this event has been so meaningful for the students and we love having Phoenix down here.” – SAGA teacher

Additionally, Maribyrnong Youth Services and Footscray Libraries partnered to deliver a Lino Printing and Clothes Swap event for our Q***r Social network of young people. The event was a great success with 14 attendees creating beautiful artworks. This event featured a DJ, Lino printing, books, boardgames, bracelet making and clothes swap!

While IDAHOBIT celebrations are over for the year, let’s all be sure to continue to stand with the LGBTQIA+ community 💛💚🧡🩷🩵💜

Tell us what worked, what didn’t, and what needs to change. Share your experience before Sunday 28 June for a chance to win an online shopping voucher: yourcityyourvoice.com.au/children
