Hidden History Revealed πŸ”

These historic gates are a fascinating reminder of Fremantle Prison's role during WWII. Installed by the Australian Army in 1940, they were built into the Knutsford Street perimeter wall as part of the prison's wartime modifications.

During WWII sections of the prison were occupied by the military. New Division operated as the Western Command Detention Barracks, housing military detainees, while part of the prison also served as an internment centre for enemy alien civilians. Civilian prisoners in the Main Cell Block remained largely separate from military detainees.

Military detainees were classified as either Services No Longer Required (SNLR) or Soldiers Under Detention (SUD). SNLR personnel had been discharged from military service before serving their sentence and were housed in New Division, while SUD personnel remained members of the Australian Military Forces and were accommodated in Divisions 3 and 4.

After the war, the gateway was bricked up from inside the prison, although the gates themselves remained visible from the street. They remained hidden in plain sight until their rediscovery during renovations in 1995.

In 2025, the gates underwent conservation treatment to stabilise corrosion and help preserve this important piece of Fremantle Prison's wartime heritage.

Today, they stand as a tangible link to a unique and lesser-known chapter in the prison's history.
