Power of the dig 🪏 💫

Steve Monite was heartbroken when his 1984 debut album failed, but now he's Nigeria's comeback king of boogie.

Growing up in 1970s Nigeria, Steve loved listening to artists like James Brown on his dad's radio.

While working for a haulage company in the city of Lagos, he dreamed of being a star. He wanted to buy fast cars and entertain the world.

So, he asked his mum and dad for a plane ticket and flew to London, where he booked studio recording time.

Artists like Marvin Gaye, Kool & the Gang, and KC and the Sunshine Band were his heroes.

"These people, when they hold a microphone, can talk the milk off your coffee," Steve says.

One of his first songs was about a girl he fell in love with. "You know, teenage love? Yeah, it's so exciting. She blew me away.”

But despite Steve’s excitement, everyone turned his music down.

He returned to Nigeria with his confidence shattered – but his luck changed when a producer from EMI records in Lagos offered him a record deal.

His electronic funk album, Only You, broke new ground for a Nigerian artist. Steve knew it was risky - but he didn't expect it to be a complete flop.

Distraught, he returned to the UK. He worked different jobs to get by, and more than thirty years later, he felt as if he was barely hanging on. He was overweight, and had been diagnosed with high blood pressure.

So when he visited his brother in 2018 in the British town of Reading, he was at the point of despair – until one of his nephews spoke to him.

"He looked at me and said, Uncle, Uncle, Uncle, I saw you on the internet. You are a big star!"

His nephew had seen a clip of R&B star Frank Ocean playing Only You, Steve’s record.

Steve couldn't believe it - but his nephew insisted. "Uncle, I'm serious," he told him. So Steve typed his name into his nephew's laptop - and discovered his music was everywhere.

He found restaurants in Spain named after his album, and people learning his songs from Turkey to India.

"I was shedding tears of joy... I said, ‘Me? How come my pictures are all over the world and I don't know?’"

It turns out a London label called Soundway Records had discovered Steve’s music while creating a compilation album of Nigeria's 80s pop and disco – and had been searching for him ever since.

Now, Steve's making music again, and he's found a new generation of fans. They call him the King of Boogie - the man who became a star just when all hope was lost.

I have been meaning to get back to sharing records here again and as a few people have written me this week about our Wave Rock Weekender closing track, let’s start here!

Less Stress - Don’t Dream It’s Over
(1990, Boy’s Own Productions)

Fantastically emotive and chugging 90bpm Crowded House remake I have been sitting on for some years , waiting for a suitable outing. Thankfully when i hurriedly stuck it on at 4am Monday (was hoping Nathan Nisbet would close tbh), i did not have capacity to consider the fact it would be the last piece of music playing at the festival after 21yrs … but in hindsight, pretty happy with my choice.
Check it out and hope it brings you something special like those of us in the Wave Rock Cafe that morning 🌊 🪨

… Now I’m walking again to the beat of a drum
And I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead, barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release

This weekend marks the 21st and final Wave Rock Weekender !!
Hats off to a brilliant festival and team 🎩 🍾
Personally, it will be my 6th time in 8 years!
(of which I have never officially been on the line up!)
Admittedly, without Nathan Nisbet ‘s continued invitation to be a Boogie Box DJ, my last decade could have looked pretty different?! Forever grateful and honoured mate 🫶

Couple here from camera roll for your enjoyment (and a bunch sadly too old to even upload apparently 🥲)
Look forward to seeing everyone in the Speak Easy one more time! 🌊 🪨

PS. It’s looking wet and with high chance of feels 🌧️🥺🫂

Class act

Hi guys, Stuart here. Sorry about the news below. If anyone fancies it, we could meet up at 7pm at Langley Park, bottom of Hill Street. I don’t know if anyone close by has a guitar, or any instrument really, we could chat and play a couple of tunes? Sorry again. If you have anything you wanna sign we could do that. I was in the park last night, it was nice under the stars!

The conversation around crowd etiquette and respecting the DJ booth is hardly new, but moments like this show why it keeps coming back.

DJ Nobu stopped his set in Geneva after repeated intrusive behaviour in the DJ booth, including people reaching toward his equipment, touching his USBs and pushing for selfies mid-set.

As booth access becomes more visible and informal, basic boundaries can get blurred: don’t touch the gear, don’t interrupt someone while they’re working, and don’t treat access to the booth as access to the DJ.

What other club etiquette rules have people been forgetting recently?

All sunshine and rainbows this Saturday at Si ~ PARADISO as I return for my monthly 7hr residency 🌞🌈

Actually, like most things on here that isn’t entirely true!
Trying to maintain a sense of underground whilst engaging a 400 person commercial setting over 7hrs is kinda challenging tbh…
How do you read a multi-faceted space and time a synchronised lift off in one that is on different schedules?
Late lunch crew are ready to pop off but early dinner is just arriving and need warming up?
Can a vibe be fun without being cheesey?
Once we’re off, how many songs in an hour does a dancefloor need to know the words to?
How many DJs are in the crowd disapproving of said song alongs?
Should I have packed more or none?!

Coming up on 8yrs of residency, it’s my only remaining rock up and play “bar gig”, my only gig that requires any musical compromise and I can say for sure; it’s a shift requiring balance but still very rewarding ! (by 9.30pm usually…)
I mean, what if someone still navigating dance music hears Rainbow 95´for the first time this Saturday ?!?

I digress, see you there 🪩 ✌️

New house required a new booth build and here’s the result!
🪵 🪚 🔊 💿 🏡

This unit is essentially a topper to the previously made 5x2 cubes (+ a 1x2 to facilitate length). My main focus was better access to my much cherished and sadly neglected 7”s, with these 4 draws holding around 1300 at the push of a draw!
I went with the slanted front in an attempt for it to not feel as looming over the dining table and generally complicate the entire thing 📐 🫠
The top piece and mixer housing are both removable for access or remodelling.

As always marine plywood, veneered edging and varnish.
Particularly happy with the wood ring patterns throughout the panelling 🌀🪾

* yes it’s tall, its my preferred mixing height (and will buy me some child proof years )
** my cdjs are in the wardrobe, where they belong.
*** no, I probably don’t have time to build you one 🤪
**** measurements pictured are likely wrong, happy to field any questions though 🫡
