This weekend we see MSAR’s first combined statewide presence at the Melbourne Boat Show. Big thanks to the volunteers from across a range of units that will be attending and representing and promoting all MSAR units and the critical work we do in protecting the boating community.

⚓ MARITIME NAVIGATION CHALLENGE | TEST YOUR BUOYAGE KNOWLEDGE!

You are navigating on a course of 090° (due East). A yellow-and-black navigation mark with two black cones pointing towards each other is observed directly ahead.

You are the Officer of the Watch. What action would you take?

i) Alter course to port
ii) Alter course to starboard
iii) Stop the engine
iv) Alter course onto the reciprocal course (270°)

Think carefully before answering! Identify the mark by its colour pattern and topmark, then consider what it indicates about the water around it.

Comment your answer and explain your reasoning. Don’t forget to mention the type of mark and the navigational significance of its topmark.
