Long road trips can sometimes be boring, but imagine how much more exciting they would be if we could build them out of LEGO®! The DFYM builders were challenged to create an amazing road trip, complete with incredible sights to see along the way.

Inspired by DFYM leader Kristina spotting a hot air balloon on a recent drive, some builders created colourful balloons floating above the cars. Others constructed magnificent waterfalls, planes soaring over crops, and even helicopters rescuing farm dogs from paddocks!

If every road trip featured sights as exciting as these LEGO® creations, the journey would be just as much fun as the destination!

The RFDS is excited to host our annual GROW Gilgandra Day on Friday, 23 October, from 10am to 2pm at Hunter Park, Gilgandra.

🌭 Enjoy a free barbecue, with Creative Community Concepts bringing Footy for Fun, laser tag, archery tag, a scavenger hunt and plenty more activities for all ages.

Keep an eye out for our It's Good to Know tent, a space dedicated to share information on the national lung cancer screening program. If you or your loved one is aged 50-70 with a history of smoking, swing by or chat to your doctor - you may be eligible for a free scan.

This day is all about strengthening community wellbeing and making it easier to connect with the local services, support and resources available in the community.

Come along, get involved, have some fun and connect with your community. We look forward to seeing you there!👋

Tech Club has kicked off a new term with a focus on logic and problem-solving! Each session will begin with a warm-up activity centred on coding or problem-solving before moving on to our main project for the term: creating an interactive fiction game.

In our first session last Thursday, we explored conditional coding through a game of Simon Says based on the concept of ‘if-then-else’. Coders had to perform certain actions if a statement applied to them, or follow an alternative instruction if it didn’t. This fun, hands-on activity introduced the idea of actions and consequences, setting the scene for our interactive fiction project.

Interactive fiction, also known as ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ stories, allows coders to create their own stories filled with choices, different pathways and consequences. The group began mapping out their adventures using Post-it notes, with the exciting theme of being locked in the library! Every decision needed a consequence, with multiple pathways leading to different outcomes.

Over the coming weeks, the focus will be on developing and mapping out the stories before bringing them to life through coding.

New participants are welcome to join Tech Club for this exciting new term!

Early childhood activities- Preschool Craft last week
Using green wool wrapped around paddle pop sticks, the children made stems, then wrapped colourful wool around coloured circles to create beautiful blooms. They cut out leaves and glued all the pieces together to bring their flowers to life. For the pots, they used paper coffee cups filled with shredded brown paper to look like soil.

Everyone was delighted with their creations and especially proud to make extra flowers for a pot on the library desk, adding a lovely splash of colour and cheer!

We look forward to sharing more fun and creative craft activities next month!

DFYM LEGO® Club is back for another term of after-school building fun! This week, our keen builders had two exciting challenges to choose from: recreate their favourite holiday activity or build a doggy birthday party to celebrate Kristina’s dog’s birthday.

Builders let their imaginations run wild, creating scenes of circus adventures and fishing trips, while others put together spectacular doggy birthday parties, complete with cakes made from LEGO® chicken nuggets and sausages! Some builders even challenged themselves to complete both tasks.

There was also plenty of time for free building, and everyone’s instructional builds are progressing well. You can check out their amazing creations on display in the library!
