I absolutely love visiting local schools in our electorate šŸ« 🄳

On Friday I caught up with students leaders, school principals, staff and students at Gladstone Views Primary School.

The Andrews Labor Government has previously provided over $3 million to upgrade this fantastic school but there is more to do and on Friday I loved hearing about the vision for future upgrades and how we might get these upgrades done.

Our local schools are the heartbeat of our community and visiting them always fills me with hope and optimism for our future!

See you again soon, and thanks for this picture of me (see behind my head) I actually thought it was quite lifelike 😊

Exciting visit from Minister Ben Carroll and MP Josh Bull at Gladstone Views Primary School.
Gladstone Views Primary School was honoured to welcome the Hon. Ben Carroll, Minister for Education and Deputy Premier, alongside Josh Bull, Member for Sunbury. Their visit marked the official announcement of the Glasses for Kids program, with an incredible 80% of our Foundation to Year 2 students participating.
Minister Carroll observed the program in action, toured our buildings and grounds, visited a Foundation classroom, and even surprised our hardworking Parents and Carers Association and volunteers at the Mother’s Day Stall.
He also spoke to the media about our school’s strong uptake of the Glasses for Kids initiative, our commitment to a phonics-based literacy strategy, targeted literacy intervention programs, our Breakfast Club, and our whole-school focus on student wellbeing and social-emotional learning.

Book Week at GVPS
27th - 30th of August

Reading is Magic

At Gladstone Views Primary School, Book Week is always a special time, and this year was no exception. With the enchanting theme of "Reading is Magic," our school community came together to celebrate the joy of reading in a variety of fun and engaging ways.

Over the past fortnight, our students had the fantastic opportunity to explore the Scholastic Book Fair, which was filled with an array of wonderful books to spark their imaginations. Many students enjoyed picking out new books, immersing themselves in magical worlds and discovering new stories.

In addition to the Book Fair, we also hosted the GVPS community book swap. This event was a delightful way for students to exchange pre-loved books, giving new life to old favourites and ensuring every child had a chance to take home a book to treasure.

The excitement continued on Thursday when our students were treated to a visit from a real-world author who shared valuable insights into the art of writing and illustrating. The author's engaging presentation inspired our budding writers and illustrators, sparking creativity and a deeper appreciation for the magic of storytelling.

The week culminated in our much-anticipated Book Week parade. It was wonderful to see students come to school dressed as their favourite characters from books, TV shows, and digital media. The parade was a vibrant celebration of creativity and a wonderful way for students to express their love of stories.

Book Week at GVPS truly showcased the magic of reading and brought our community together in a celebration of literature and imagination. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this week a memorable one!

The Victorian Government announced steps taken by the department to revise both the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) and the department’s guidance on the teaching of reading in the first 3 years of primary school.

The evidence is very clear that reading programs need to be based on what is now commonly referred to as the ā€˜Big 6’ of reading: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

In respect to the teaching of phonics, the evidence is strongest for a systematic synthetic phonics approach, with about 25 minutes of the 2-hour daily literacy block allocated to this.

Gladstone Views Primary School has already been implementing these approaches for the last 3 years and will not need to make any changes with regard to the Victorian Government's announcement, but will continue to improve our practice.

Our students in their first 3 years of their primary schooling at GVPS have shown very pleasing results in their reading.

This is an excellent selling point for our school. Prospective parents on school tours have been very pleased in hearing this is our whole school approach.

It was a wonderful turnout at our GVPS community working bee. Thank you to all those who attended to prepare the Wildlife Garden and to beautify areas of the school.
