⚽️ 🎨Children's Week recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children. This year we are shining a light on our Chill n Chat Program - an after school mentoring program offered to school aged children from years 4 - 6.

Established over 10 years ago, Chill n Chat offers a safe space where children can build relationships and participate in group and sporting activities. It is also focuses on establishing healthy connections with themselves and others through emotional regulation and mindfulness activities. 🧘‍♀️

Community Development Worker Jordan says having a program like this is important particularly for young children who are learning about themselves and may also be facing other core issues in their day-to-day lives. 🌱

“Our program encourages the children to feel confident to voice their needs. It also provides them with the useful tools and strategies they can implement within their home and at school”.

Domestic and family violence is never just between the adults. When abuse happens in the home, children also experience the fallout firsthand and feel the impact in every part of their daily lives.

For a child, family violence from a parent can look and feel like:
* A home lacking warmth, emotional safety and reliable care
* Used as a bargaining chip for manipulation, guilt and coercion between partners
* Experience harsh, unpredictable discipline
* Hearing one parent constantly undermined or spoken down to

The trauma doesn't magically stop when a relationship ends. For many children, the danger, stress and post-separation trauma can escalate, keeping families trapped in cycles of fear long after a separation.

Each pair represents a woman or child whose life was taken by domestic and family violence. The shoes are laid one at a time, in silence, by people who work in this every day.

By midday, Martin Place is full of them.

Join us to honour and remember the women and children killed by domestic and family violence.

Our Vigil is supported by a performance from Tim Minchin, musician, writer and actor. Main speaker Tarang Chawla, one of Australia's leading voices working to end men's violence against women and children.

Wednesday 25 November, 12pm. Martin Place, Sydney C*D, between Pitt and Castlereagh St.

Every October during Mental Health Month, AdopTEA invites adopted people, families, friends, colleagues and communities to gather over a cup of tea and start conversations around adoptee mental health. 🫖

The initiative is a great opportunity to share stories, listen without judgement and recognise experience that can too often go unseen.

The Benevolent Society's Post Adoption Support Queensland (PASQ), helps bring AdopTEA to communities across Queensland as part of its broader work supporting people affected by adoption.
This year, PASQ will be hosting one in Loganholme on Wednesday October 28.

This Anti-Poverty Week, Benevolent are proud to have co-hosted an event together with Mission Australia Housing, Vinnies NSW, Campbelltown City Council, NSW and Number 8 Prison Project at Campbelltown Civic Hall on Friday 16 October.

The purpose of this event was to bring together local services and community organisations during Anti-Poverty Week - to connect local families and residents with information, support and practical resources. We were also honoured to have Lynda Voltz (Auburn MP) speak at the event.

Poverty affects people in our community every day. Together, we can challenge the systems that create disadvantage, amplify the voices of people with lived experience, and work towards a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

As National Carers Week comes to a close, our recognition of carers doesn't. 💜

Over the last week, there were opportunities to celebrate carers, share stories, build connections, and shine a light on the invaluable role they play every day - including our High Tea event held on Thursday October 15 at NSW Parliament House.

But for carers, caring doesn't stop when the week ends.

Carer Gateway remain committed to continuing to listen to carers, champion their voices and connect them with the supports, information and community they need each and every day.

To every carer who shared their story, attended an event, connected with others or simply took a moment for themselves over the last week - thank you!

To all carers, wherever you are on your caring journey - Carer Gateway is here all year round. 💜

For 25 years, Home Support Team Member Shauna has helped older Australians remain safe, independent and comfortable in their own homes. 🏡

When Shauna first joined Benevolent, she worked casually two days a week in a job-share arrangement. The flexibility to work school hours meant she could balance the role with raising her young children, while finding purpose in work that built on her experience.

💗Today, that same flexibility helps Shauna balance work with supporting her ageing parents. “The flexibility of this work is one of the things that makes aged care so rewarding.”
