Some good advice from Mole Creek Fire Brigade
Planning a Burn on Your Property?
Although we’re only in spring and the Fire Permit Period is not currently in place in our area, conditions can change quickly. Now is a good time to remind everyone how to carry out burns safely.
1. Check the weather
Wind is one of the main reasons burns escape and become uncontrollable. Check the forecast before lighting up and avoid burning on windy days.
2. Check the surrounding area
Despite it being spring, our region has experienced below-average rainfall. Check how dry the surrounding grass, vegetation and other flammable materials are before starting your burn.
3. Never leave a burn unattended
Not every bonfire is one you want to stand around with a cold bevvie—but if you’re burning a heap, remain nearby and keep it within sight at all times. Stay until the fire is fully extinguished.
4. Make sure you have enough water available
When did you last check your fire tank? Before lighting up, make sure your tank is full and that you have hoses, pumps and sufficient water ready in case the burn escapes.
Before burning, always check the current fire restrictions and permit requirements, notify or register your burn where required, and consider letting your neighbours know.
A little preparation can prevent a planned burn from becoming an emergency. If a fire escapes, call 000 immediately.
