City of Hobart has started work on closing the gap between the Argyle St bike lanes and Campbell St bike lanes at Burnett St. Riders must "take the lane" on Burnett St to turn right into Campbell St, a daunting manoeuvre, even for confident riders. The new works will direct riders across the road at the signalised intersection of Argyle St, along a shared path on Burnett St to a new link to the Campbell St bike lanes. Council took the opportunity to do the work as part of asset replacement works on the deteriorating Burnett St footpath. https://www.hobartcity.com.au/Council/News-and-publications/Media-releases/New-Burnett-Street-project-boosts-safety-for-vulnerable-road-users

Traffic movements around the Royal Hobart Hospital are going to change again due to construction reducing Argyle Street to two traffic lanes, but this time bikes won't be affected.

Cars will be prevented from turning left into Liverpool Street from Argyle Street between 7 am and 7 pm but bicycles and taxis will still be allowed to turn left.

More information on timing of the changed use of the closed traffic lane is available on the hospital website: https://www.health.tas.gov.au/hospitals/royal-hobart-hospital/emergency-department-works-and-temporary-relocation

Construction has begun in earnest this week at the Bellerive ferry terminal so bike riders who usually park their bikes may want to take them onboard as the current hoops will be removed.

Hazell Bros will provide alternative bike parking during the one-year construction period but we're still waiting to see what this looks like.

There are banks of hoops in Hobart where bikes can be locked on the corner of Morrison and Murray streets and Elizabeth and Davey streets, both of which have a lot of people walking past them which can improve security.

Have you ditched the bike to catch the bus? Or have you started using a bike to access public transport stops? The Menzies Research Centre wants to know how the free public transport fares influence travel choices.

Our research shows that being physically active plays an important role in preventing many chronic conditions and diseases. That’s why changes in how people use public transport are of interest to our preventative health and cardiovascular researchers.

From 30 March to 1 July 2026, the Tasmanian Government is offering free travel on buses and ferries across the state. Our researchers are seeking to better understand whether this free fares initiative has led Tasmanians to use public transport more, and how this may be impacting physical activity.

You can support our research by completing our quick 10‑minute survey, open until midnight on 31 July 2026. Participants can also choose to enter a draw to win one of five $100 gift cards.

🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️ More Kingborough residents are choosing to walk and ride

New data from the 2025 Super Sunday Recreation Count shows a 15% increase in active travel across Kingborough compared with last year.
The results highlight a growing shift towards walking and cycling as part of daily life, helping to create a more connected and accessible community.

👟 The busiest location was Balmoral Road and Beach Road at Kingston Beach, with 668 trips recorded in just three hours, a massive 58% increase on last year.
🌿 Use of the Whitewater Creek Track has nearly doubled over the past two years.

These annual counts, conducted by Bicycle Network , provide valuable insights into how our community uses walking and cycling infrastructure and help Council plan for safe, accessible and well‑connected routes into the future.

By continuing to invest in active travel, we’re making it easier for people to stay active and get around their neighbourhoods.
